Stevens-Duryea

We just finished up our local VMCCA (regional) tour yesterday in Defiance, Ohio, our Three Rivers Antique Car Run. We had 88 pre-war cars this year, down from past years by 12-20 cars, but still a very nice group including four nice Packards. The most interesting and impressive "new" car on the tour this year was a 1913 Stevens-Duryea. I guess it's very rare, and I might add, very nice! Have you ever seen one?

Transmission jack or not, that baby is heavy and some younger muscle is needed. When I reinstalled my Clipper unit with OD, it literally took two men and two teen boys to lift and align it into place. Opening the inspection door is essential, not only for viewing it, but also for light and another lifting point option. We needed to "stretch" the hole in the frame X a bit to get it in. GOOD LUCK (you'll need it!)....

Locally, a late dentist and Packard guy owned a '27 closed car that he clamed was owned by a Hollywood madame...again no documentation, just word of mouth. How can you prove something like that?

I'm running Valvoline 50 wt racing oil (excellent quality) because of the problem you are having and have had good success.

Re: Which Packard museum in Ohio?

The Packard museum in Dayton is an old Packard dealership building and privately owned. They have a nice collection and it is worth the stop. The museum in Warren tells the history of Packard better but has less cars on display. If I had to choose, I'd go to Dayton. The art deco building is worth your time alone...

Your engine should be gray. I used Massey Ferguson high temp.light gray on my '52 Mayfair. It was the correct color and buying it locally saves the shipping.

Bayliff's have a nice restaurant in Lima, OH, called the Packard Grille. Maybe they should stick to grilling steaks!

Have you considered using leather? It was an option for all the Clippers. They may have been the first Packard line that made leather an option for closed cars. Our '41 had leather so we found a very close match and went with it. We are very happy we did...

bushings and linkage rods
#20

The column shift on my '41 Clipper is so sloppy that I think I need to replace all the bushings and linkage rods from the transmission to the steering column shaft. They all seem to have some play and added together, there is way too much slop. It ended up in a lock-up and chipped gears once already. Does ayone know where new rods, shafts and bushing are avaliable? I don't see them at Max Merrit... If new stuff isn't available can they be rebuilt somehow?
