Re: Packard Proving Grounds Open House.

I was there with my 49 Deluxe Eight. My wife came with me this time and we enjoyed the hour or so ride to Shelby Twp. My wife did some early Christmas Shopping for me in the Gift Shop, a sweatshirt, dvd, and 2 coffee mugs. This was my second time and it was wonderful, as usual. The five cars or so owned by Richard and Linda K? (former owner of Lionel Trains) were just hard to describe. I took a few pictures that I will try to post. I parked next to a 37 twelve with a custom body by Brunn in New York owned by Mr. Golling. Drop dead gorgeous! In the non-Packard area, there were three 39- 40 cars parked together, a Cadillac,a Lincoln and a La Salle.

Chuck: What is the brand and model number of the air cleaner?
Will it work with the standard cover? Beautiful bird, by the way, sorry for your loss.

Re: Door lock assembly spring
Home away from home
Home away from home

Paul E. Gallagher
There was recently some talk of this problem in the thread: "Driver door doesn't close properly"

My problem was the worn door latch assembly, rather then the sagging hinge problem.

For what it worth, this is were I stand with my problem:
I was able to remove the door latch assembly with the help of all who replied to the forum. I took the latch to my local locksmith and he didn't think the spring was broken.
I am not so sure.

I surmised that if the broken part of the spring dropped down by gravity, that was when the latch would not open.
My friend Joel Ray (packard1) said that the problem is that the star wheel on the inside gets chewed up and that causes the problem.

To make a long story short,I used some very thin plastic cable ties to fix the spring so it stays together.[/color] It is working good now but I consider this a temporary fix.
(The spring looks like the first one for sale in the e-bay link).

I would like to find a replacement so that I can have it rebuilt when I find someone who does that kind of work .

I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of the fix before I re-assembled it.

I will be there Friday night and all day Saturday. I am not bringing the Packard (maybe next year)as we are stopping there as part of a week long trip. I have never been to this event and I am really looking forward to it.
It will be my pleasure to thank everyone in person who has been so helpful to me on this site. Paul G.

Thanks to HH 's excellent picture, I got the lock assembly out. Any ideas on a replacement or getting mine fixed? ( I already checked out Max Merritt)

I hope I don't have to drive for the rest of the summer with a bungee cord holding my door closed. That would be alright if I had a Plymouth, or a Ford, but NOT IN A PACKARD!

HH: Thanks for the picture. The screw must go into that bracket. I could not find it before, but now I will know where to look. If I remove the window stop and the screw, that would allow the lock assembly to drop down.

The spring that is broke or loose is at the very top right hand corner of the picture.

Thanks for the help.

Turbo or anyone else: The lock assembly froze completely and I could not open the door at all.

I clicked the inside and outside handles until the faulty spring finally went back into place and the door opened. Phew!

I have a printed copy of the Service Manual and I was able to remove the trim panel - no problem.

I removed all the screws holding the lock assembly in, but the window runway ( window channel?) is preventing the lock assembly from coming out of the hole, and dropping down as the manual shows. The manual says to remove the trim panel (ok), window stop (ok) and the rear runway retainer screw. The last one I can't figure out. Do I have to take the window out?

I can feel the spring right behind the star wheel (on the inside of the door) is loose or broken) and that is preventing the lock from working.

Any help? and if I get it out, the source for a new lock assembly or repair?

Turbo: I have taken the door handle off, and lubricated everything inside. When the latch sticks, the star wheel on the outside will not spin freely. When this happens ( with the door handle off) I can see a spring popping out where it should not be. Is this a good explanation? If you know what I need and a source for the part, I would appreciate the info.

I have a similar problem on my 49 Deluxe Eight - 23 Series, but the door lock assembly is worn on the driver's door. (it sticks quite regularly so the door won't open from the inside or outside.) Max Merritt may be able to find one ($295 minus $100 for returned core) or rebuild mine. Any other sources, or is their a supplier who re-builds them? Could a good locksmith fix this? Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: fog lights

As you can see from the attached picture, I got the fog lights working. Thanks to all who replied, especially Big Kev for the excellent diagram.

I just followed the diagram and was careful to hide wires where I could. I used 12 ga wire (16, 14 and 12 were suggested, so I went with the thickest). I used a 20 amp in-line fuse because the fuse in the switch was 20 amp. I taped all of the connections after I crimped the wires. I only had to go back once and change the ground to the relay, and the lights went right on.

The switch under the dash looks nice and original to a 40ish
car. It has a light so that the knob glows when its on. Pretty cool !
