Re: 23 series '49 access to gas tank sending unit
Home away from home
Home away from home

Deskdriver
A few months since I've updated this post. Just got my gas tank back from the shop after more than 3 months! Its a long story and doesn't really pertain to cutting a hole in the trunk pan.

Estimated the location based on the small hump in the pan before it was cut. It appears it was there to give a gap between the sending unit and bottom of the pan. We were off a little, but that could also be my car as there is evidence that it was rear ended on at least 1 occasion. A piece of 18 gauge floor pan steel was used along with the piece that was cut out to make a larger cover.

Once the tank was installed the sending unit was tested with the gauge and then it was installed. After the wiring was completed. The cover was drilled, sealant used and it was secured in place.

Here as some photos from start to finish might possibly have to take another post to get them all in.

Thanks for waiting.
Barry

They are reliable but it may take a while. H.U. builds each one when they are ordered, mine took about 2 months.

Be sure and tell them EVERY thing you have, like interior lighting, under seat heater fan, the cigar lighter on the back of the drivers seat, trunk light etc. Don't forget to tell them about all the switches on the dash, electro clutch etc. The do send some extra wire and connectors, which was helpful as I forgot about the "Reading" light at the rear window.

I found their instructions really easy to follow. When I had questions they answered the phone (They do screen their calls).

All the best.

Bought a data plate on Ebay and it was terrible! It did not match the screw holes(Plate not drilled either), the print was fuzzy and it was on aluminum and not stainless. I sent it back and did get a refund. Buyer be aware.

Re: What would you have if you didn't have a Packard?

Where to start? There are many I would like to have, if Packards were not built. I like the independent car makers, Kaiser/Frazer ('48 or '49), a true Shelby Cobra, bullet nose Studebaker. There are many, but the car I would like, is a '36 Nash Lafayette.

MrBumble, I like the Sunliner also. We had 5 or 6 come to our Saturday morning car show in Pismo Beach from So. Cal. Great cars! http://www.pismoderelicts.com/

John, I and am sure many do, enjoy reading your blog. Not only what you write about but the responses from other members. Yours is even more enlightening as we can see if from another place and the difficulties and successes you encounter.
Keep it up!

I think this is an excellent idea, we have nothing better to do than learn. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't but at least someone is looking. We learn from our experiences and failures.

This technology was not available back then and it may prove beneficial and exciting. At least he's not dropping a small block Chevy with an auto trans and a Ford rear end!

His cost is not my concern but I hope ptv shares his experience(s) with us.

That's my 2 cents and I guess you can ask for some change back.

I might add to put some penetrant in each cylinder before turning it over. Lots of folks here recommend Marvel's Mystery Oil. Let is soak for day or so. See if you can turn the engine by hand. If not let it soak.

If it turns free by hand, then change the oil and spark plugs. Of course the fuel should also be checked as Oz states.

Hope to see your progress!
