Re: fog lights

Paul E. Gallagher
Thanks to all who replied, especially to Big Kev for the excellent diagram. I think I got it!

One more question: Can I run a wire from 87A to the second fog light? ( This was one of my reasons for using a relay)

If not, how do I connect the two lights to the lead from 87?
Is it a simple as just connecting the three wires together with, say a wire nut, or is there another type of connector?
I know it is as simple question, but how do you do it?

I just took the knob off of the switch and it does, in fact, have a light bulb behind the knob.

to HH 's question: the e-bay ad said it was illuminated, and again, could be used to switch on both the fog lights and the tail lights, as the factory switch worked.

Thanks for all the help.

The fog lights say "Packard" on the housing.

There is no label on the switch, I got it on E-bay. It only has two positions - on and off. The advertisement said it could be used to switch on the fog lights with the tails lights like the original switch worked. (I probably will not do this)

The relay is marked: 6V 20/30A
0332204001
BOSCH

974 (with a circle around it)
Made in Spain

I bought it from Fifth Avenue Internet Garage

It is similar to what is shown in the second diagram. but my car (49 Deluxe Eight - 23 Series) is positive ground.

to clarify my inquiry:
1. the fog lights are original to the car but never hooked-up
2. The relay is a BOSCH 6 volt and it has five terminals: one for the power from battery, two go to the fog lights, one is to ground the relay, and the last goes to the switch.
I am trying to include pictures of the relay and switch.
2. The switch has three terminals: one marked BATT, the other two blank. It has a 20 amp fuse as part of it. It screws down behind the dashboard.

My questions: the lead that goes from the relay to the switch, which terminal do I attach it to? BATT or one of the blank ones. Secondly, where do I connect the other lead from the switch, does it just need to ground to complete the circuit or what else?

I sure appreciate all this advise! AND ALL INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF ADMISSION!

Wiring for fog lights - using a 6 volt relay - one terminal runs to the switch. The switch I bought has three terminals, BAT, and two blank. Which terminal on the switch do I use? And then do I need another wire to ground to complete the circuit? (The relay will be grounded) Will it work to hook the relay up to the starter solenoid for power. Any help is appreciated. I'll be glad to further clarify.

Re: Ignition switch, '49?

The ignition switch on 23rd series actually has a light in it. This web site lists this as one of the differences or improvements on 23rd series cars over 22nd series. I tried it out on my 49 Deluxe Eight, it barely lights at all (very dim) and only goes on when the parking lights are on. You would have to turn on the parking lights to illuminate the switch, and it would have to be practically pitch black inside the car to notice it. the light goes out when you push in the headlight switch a second time to turn on the headlights. I am not sure if the light is part of the switch or just connected to the opening.

Re: 49 23 Series- Won't start.

Well, i finally got it started!

1. I was able to find some replacement parts for the started switch from a local friend. ( i really got lucky!)He suggested from his diagrams, that I disconnect the linkage, and push the throttle all the way open before inserting the ball so that it was in the right place. I used my parts to try it out.

2. This didn't work. I next used some of his used parts (spring, plastic with the contacts and plunger from his set.) Reassembled with the linkage off and throttle wide open.
This worked. , but the car wouldn't start.

3. I cleaned the plugs, and reset the gaps.

4. I figured my choke was not adjusted right, went back to the forums online and found instructions to adjust the choke. One thing I found interesting was that it said to re-install the air cleaner before tring to start. This didn't sound right, but it worked. It was running a little ruff, and I am hearing a noise in the water pump, but I'll try again tomorrow .

5. My car is maroon and came from Kentucky. I don't know who the "doc" is but I'd love to see his car if he still has it. Thanks to all for the help

Well it still won't start BUT:

Thanks to HH56 for the illustations. I think I had the plunger in up-side down. The detailed diagrams helped to figure it out.

Thanks to 49 Pack for the linkage suggestions. I tried this first because it was the easiest, but unforetunetly, it didn't help.

Thanks to Owen, as always, the idea about jumping the terminals worked. The starter turned over! I took it apart again and tried to clean the contacts as best as I could, but it still didn't work. I guess I need to replace the switch or less there is another trick to try.

kanter is listing the part as $98 used or $195 new. This seems a little expensive. Any other sources?

Thanks again guys, you're the best!
