I agree with Ross, if and when you take the carb. back apart, you can blow in the fuel inlet and raise and lower the float and it should stop and start as the float is moved up and down. Just clean all the gas off before blowing in it.

I also had a problem with sticky valves. Sticking meaning not moving their full travel. I only found this after removing the head. But the difference with mine was the engine sat to long from the last time it was started. And not only #8 but #1, #2 and #7 also. What I found was some black tar like stuff on the valve stems(Maybe carbon and varnish).
I have heard of people using Marvel Mystery Oil and having good luck with it, just dribble a little down the Carb. with the engine running. So you might want to give it a try. I would have but I already had a tapping noise coming from the valves and I figured it would be better to just redo the top end. Here's a picture of my #8 valves, noticed the black on the stem. They did pull out by hand but real slow.

I agree, as a last resort. But that's my next step, since I also have a stuck hub on the drivers side. Once I get my other Packard out of the way.
I have all ready tried the hub puller and heat with no effect on getting it off. I did get the other side off, with a lot of work. And when it did come off it sounded like a gun going off. Scared the (what you know) out of me. So don't forget to leave the nut on.

I've never tried this, but one way is to loosen the nut, drive the car on a rough road. And than when you get back it should come right off. Also don't forget to back off the adjustment for the brakes.

Yes, I did try heat and Freeze-It with no help. So for now I'm putting it back together and pulling the engine later this Summer. This is my spare engine and not the original engine, so I'll be putting the original back in.

Well, I've decide to put the engine back together and pull the engine out this summer and put the original engine back in after going over it(the original engine).
I can't find my tool for checking valve clearances, does anyone one have the drawings so I can make a new one? Plus I found out all my spare Hyd. Lifters are for a Cadillac.

Yes, it just goes to show that when one cheaps out, it will cost you in the end.
But I still can't believe how bad the sender was eaten up with corrosion. This just didn't happen over night, it took time and the only thing that had changed was where I buy my gas they switched to ten percent ethanol. I'm thinking about four or five years ago was when they made the switch and I didn't think too much about. I would here stories about ethanol and think it was just another hyped up story like no-lead gas and no zine in the oil and how bad all of this is for our old cars. So from now on I'm using a fuel stabilizer with a full tank and try to use my car more often.
