Sounds like if there was some wear on the fields, that the bushing/bearings were worn out in the starter.....

Reading through the starting procedure for a 1951 Packard. I do not see any mention of pushing down on the throttle to set the choke before starting? Is the starter only engaged when the key is turned on or will it engage anytime the throttle is depressed and the engine is not running?

Be hard to get a hacksaw blade down in there to cut it, wouldn't it? Looks like it sits down in a "well".

Do you always have to replace the boot, when servicing the front joint? In the service manual they replace the boot.

I was just wondering how adaptable any other transmission might be to the Packard clutch housing? But if they built their own transmissions it would probably require an adapter plate to mount up any non Packard transmission.
