Looking good, Kevin. I hope to see it in January, maybe earlier.

Yes, that's where I stored my clothes pins.

Got to work on the engine. I removed the transmission. Borrowed a puller to pull the cam shaft gear off and didn't need it. I did use it to move the crank shaft gear so the cam shaft gear would come off.
I had to tap on the oil pump to twist it to get it to come off. After it was loose it just pulled out. I already marked the distributor, so when I put the cam shaft back in and line up the cam shaft and crank shaft, putting in the oil pump should be easy.
I used a slide puller to get the cam shaft to move to start pulling it out. Once the cam shaft was out I removed the clothes pin from the stuck lifter and it fell out the bottom, I had already removed the oil pan.
When I inspected the cam shaft, I noticed the gears for the oil pump were broken off so almost a third of the gears were missing on one side and one gear was completely missing. I panicked and went to a friends house and he went back and found a NOS cam shaft in one of his sheds that was given to him and it didn't fit any cars he had so he gave it to me! What a relief. Now I need to get a tappet and a hydraulic lifter, along with a new timing chain and some gaskets. I heard that I don't need to buy timing gears, but just the timing chain. Any thoughts?

'"I....put the clothes pins on the tappets to hold them up when I can pull the camshaft out"

Better than clothes pins on the fuel line! ' Ozstatman

But that's where I keep them!

JW, thanks, I did not know about the clearance and I now know I'll need to check it when I put everything back in.
I got back to the car and bought some dry ice to go with my vice grips. I put the dry ice on the hydraulic lifter hoping to shrink it, but it didn't work.
So I decided to pull the camshaft out to get the tappet out and remove the stuck lifter.
I didn't have a harmonic balancer puller so I went to Autozone and borrowed one. Of course it didn't work so I decided to modify the puller to make it work. I cut a piece of angle iron and put the base of the puller under it and bolted the angle iron to the harmonic balancer and it came out real easy.
I pulled the 2 bolts holding on the oil pump, after I marked the point on the distributor where the rotor is pointing to. Of course I lined up the timing gears (after I pulled the timing chain cover off). I did notice that I have a lot of slop in the timing chain, that is going on my list of things to buy.
I was hoping to leave the engine in the car, but it looks like the oil pump is not coming off easy so I will pull the motor out. I do have to pull the oil pan off to get the tappet and stuck lifter out, so with the engine out it will be a little easier.
I did get a little excited and put the clothes pins on the tappets to hold them up when I can pull the camshaft out.

I have a 1955 Clipper Custom and I changed over to the Chrysler 727 with the Ultra-Torc conversion. I have over 50,000 miles on the transmission. When you do change over, look for someone who has done this before. I had a problem with the shop 'learning' how to do the conversion. I would go with the Chevy overdrive transmission. Mine was done over 12 years ago and the Chevy version wasn't available then. That's the way I'd go. The 727 is strong enough for the engine, but I miss the overdrive. I have not had a problem since the kinks were worked out from the conversion and I do drive this car and I enjoy it. My wife will even drive this car with confidence. After all, they are meant to drive.

Finally got to my valve problem. I had a friend come over and grind my valves and he gave me 2 intake valves that he had. He found that I had 4 exhaust valves that had a groove near the valve spring holding keys, so he gave me 4 exhaust valves that he had already ground down for me. He then proceeded to grind the valve seats in the engine and it looked pretty slick. It did not take too much time at all. We then lapped the valves in each spot. Now the problem I have is with a hydraulic lifter body that is stuck in a cam follower. See picture. I have sprayed it with WD-40 and another penetrating oil. I can only grab about 1/8 inch with my pliers. I need to pick up a set of vise grips. Do you have any suggestions? Has any one seen this before?

Re: 55 clipper three prong stop light switch

I bought a 12V relay and a switch from I think a Toyota that I mounted on the steering column and is a Normally Closed switch. I have it in contact with the brake pedal arm. When I press on the brake pedal, the switch is released and the switch closes and turns on the relay which turns on the brake lights and turns off the load levelers. When I release the brake pedal, the switch is made and the relay turns off and so is the brake lights and the load levelers are turned back on. I have been driving with this for 10 years. Being an electronic technician this was an easy fix for me because I had the problem of the brake switch going bad and it seemed like a good idea. All of this is inside the car under the dash. The switch alone cannot handle all of the current of the brake lights but the relay can.

The engine has at least 92,000 miles on it, but of course the speedometer is stuck at 50 mph! The engine has not ran in 5 years.
I borrowed a valve spring compressor from a friend and took all the valves out and stuffed the holes near each valve so I would not lose a keeper.
I spun each valve in the block and found #2 and #3 intake valves to wiggle. There are a few exhaust valves that were not quite true but I am not sure.
I got a 2x6 piece of wood and drilled 16 holes and put the valves in the order they are in the block.
The block itself looks good but I'll get a second opinion.
So now I'm looking for some new valves. Should I dress up the valve seats? If so, how? They look clean, but I'm not a mechanic. I have not rebuilt a motor by myself. My brother was the brains behind me rebuilding the 55 V8, but he moved so I need another mechanic to help with this one.

So this is where I am today. I tried to start the car and of course it did not fire. I have gas and I have spark. I then knew I had to do a compression check:
cyl
1 50
2 0
3 0
4 52
5 59
6 80
7 75
8 71

So without thinking, I just pulled the head off to see if I could find the problem. I did not see anything, but I am not a trained mechanic. I hooked up my new 6V battery to the car and turned the engine over and all valves move. It looks like the intake valve on 2 and 3 don't seat all the way. But I can't tell. Where do I go from here?
