Re: 37 gas pedal

Update- I received and installed the Packard gas pedal from Max Merrit late last night. Fits like a glove and no grunting and swearing trying to get it to a position where it would function like the after market version it replaces. The only downside is that I don't have an OEM core to send back to them. My fault, not theirs. First road test this Sunday, weather permitting.

Thanks for that P Newbie. And thanks also to all who have been sharing their knowledge and experience on this issue. That should make the task much easier for a novice like me when I get to the point of crawling under there. To be 60 lbs lighter and 15 years younger would be a big help too, but that's on me

As an aside to this conversation, I am going to make an attempt to drive to The Florida Packard Club meet here in town on Sunday. It's only a few miles from where the car is kept. On my last two forays around the block, the speedometer has not bounced but the cable has made noise as it has for a long time. I only hope I don't go out for a ride and back for a tow...

Thank you. I was so busy trying to wrap my mind around the info I didn't connect the name. In my several rereads that part got lost in my head.

Who is Pat? I'm guessing he rehabs speedometers? If so, that would be a good winter project repair (among many I have on my to do list).

39sixsedanman, am I understanding correctly that on the 37 Junior, there are 4 nuts holding the speedometer into the dash? By removing the nuts, does the gauge just slide out of the dash? If that is correct, why would I need to remove the bezel? Not trying to be dense, but my car is stored across town and I'm not able to have a look at mine right at the moment.

I bit the bullet and ordered a replacement Packard part pedal from Max Merrit this week. Until it arrives, the old one will suffice then serve as a standby.

Thanks for the help.

Another in a long line of questions-

I took the 37 out of the garage last weekend for the first time since I got it shipped to me last year and drove it around the block a few times. The most noticeable thing was a whining sound that eventually went away. It reminded me that it always made that noise for the last several years when I would move it the short distance from the storage garage to my parent's garage to just put some movement into it and for a few of those years during that short drive the speedometer needle would bounce all over the place. The last couple of years when I would move the car, the bouncing stopped and maintained a steady reading but the whine would still be there. Also, while my father was alive it made that noise for a couple of miles and did the needle bouncing then return to a steady reading and he said it was that the speedometer cable needed to be lubed. It would eventually go away then too.

My question is, how should I lube the cable? There is a speedometer cable discussion in the forums when I searched, but it is for a 40's something speedometer cable issue and indicates removal of the dash to get to a lube hole. Is that the same for a 1937 Junior?

Re: Tubed tires

Taking this one step further, the tires are old enough that regardless of tubed or no tube, they should be replaced because of age. The manual shows the car as having had "balloon tires" which I assume means tubed tires. If I find that the tires currently on the car are not tubed, should I add tubes?

I hope I'm not putting my lack of experience out on full display with this question, but aside from removing the tire from the rim, is there a visual way I can tell if my tires are tubed or tubeless?
