question on Packard Caribbean Sterling Silver keys, I know that the 54 Caribbeans came with a set of keys with special Sterling Silver caps on them with "Packard Caribbean" on one side and the original owners name on the reverse. The 54 Caribbean sales brocure mentions these keys and I have a 54 Caribbean that came with these but was wondering if the 55 or 56's possbly came with these also? thanks!

I sell these plates for $25.00 each plus $2.50 shipping in the contiguous 48 US States for the 1951, 1952 and 1953 Packards, (1954 do not use these along with 55-56 as Pufer and Williams website suggests) mine have crosshairs where you drill your own holes, this can come in handy where the original Packard plates were approx +/- 1/32 of an inch off sometimes.... they are exact to factory original, i accept paypal or check,

the ebay vendor on this same plate is 99.00 plus 8.00 shipping as described here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Serial-Plates-Packard-/221146013745?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item337d546031&vxp=mtr

I believe Pufer and Williams is $40.00?

thanks, Vance George

Re: 1953 Paint Color

oops, NB should have read NE for Nebraska, I have received three reports of red cars but interesting enough all have blank or missing door plates and interiors that do not seem likely to correspond with a red car. I am not saying that they did not produce any red cars but none have been truly verified. This also applies to medium blues, dark blues, yellows (non sahara sand) , light greens etc... also Packard dealer announcements usually mention new colors being introduced and dropped and no Caribbean color changes are mentioned in all the material that i have read. The Carnation and Amythest color scheme was announced for 1954 for the pacific. The special emblems were also inventoried for sapre parts.

A gentleman who worked for Packard (Bob Aller? I recall) who bought a new 53 Caribbean (his dealer/factory documentation is now being sold on CD's) told me at a national show I attended that you could special order a color on the 53 Caribbeans as long it was one that packard offered as a standard color AND as long as it would match an existing Caribbean interior color scheme. He also said that mitchell bentley's paint work was not up to par with Packard's and that they had to repaint quite a few caribbeans under warranty and many folks made color changes early in the game. he also mentioned that his own personal car underwent an early color change

what is stamped on the door code in black ink on your 53 Caribbean? I may be wrong but I thought only the 1954's had the color code on the glove compartment

The Valencia Orange car seen in many articles was repainted back in 1955 the owner said

The only two colors other than the four advertised colors we have truly verified was a white example (in PA) and two black examples (one in NB, one in AL), both with correct color codes indicated on the door plate

switching to postwar, Jim Nance made a lot of mistakes but he tried very hard to make the 1953 and 1954's world class quality cars. These cars were built with very high build quality. The doors can be closed with a solid thud with a single finger they are so precise. The 53-54 7 passenger sedans and limos brought back the long wheelbase models to the lineup and the 53-54 Caribbeans were simply gorgeous.
The 55's and 56's were fine cars but the Conner plant issue hurt their build quality. A "sorted out" 55/56 is really a fine car. It is sad that Packard management lessened the emphasis on the senior cars after 1934 and took profit as a higher priority. Nance tried all he could to bring back the Senior lines to top realm but it was simply too little too late. The 120 line saved packard but also killed it. They should have called the 120 another name to not water down the Packard name. (Though the 120 was a darn fine car for its price). Cadillac later brought out the Cimarron and Catera and never learned from Packard's mistake of watering down your brandsake.
