Re: Removing paint

I don't like strippers because of the mess they make. You might try a heat gun to soften the paint and a good sharp edged scraper. I have had good success with this method and find it quick, clean and efficient as it will cut thru even a heavy coat of bondo.

Woodcraft sells packages of "stepped" dowels that are great for filling worn holes. Just coat them in glue and drive them in with a few taps of a hammer. Because they are stepped (tapered in steps) they fit nicely into tapered wood screw holes, whereas a regular dowel is either too large for the bottom of the hole or too small for the outer part of the hole.

West wrote that he had the ones he bought rebuilt for about $400. Was that for two or four shocks? Apparently, there are two types of these shocks, one that disassembles quite easily and one tht is welded together. I got a quote of about $900 to rebuild four shocks from Apple Hydraulics (for the welded up type) for by 640.

Thanks,

1929 640 Water pump/fan hub pulley

Took my pulley with water pump shaft into the machine shop to have a new shaft made. They broke the pulley removing the shaft. Anyone have a spare pulley or even a complete worn out water pump they would sell. As far as I can tell from the parts books, it is unique to the large eights of this year. It is the type of water pump that is inset into the front of the engine block, not offset to the side. I have attached some sketches.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Need to find correct Disc Wheel inner tube valve stems

Over the years, I have saved a number of "bent" valve stems and found them to see what I could add to this thread. I found that I have two types. The first has the bend at about 2", but the bend forms an angle greater than 90 degrees so that the stem would exit a hole that was slightly more than 2" from where it comes thru the hole in the rim. The others bend at 2", but at 90 degrees. What is the distance that you need?

The PI Judging Guide is pretty weak on details in that it doesn't cover much of the car yet. The first draft came out quite a few years ago covering Motor and Wheels but it doesn't look like any further progress has been made.

Rod:

Here aare some pictures of an original top for a 640 Phaeton. Sorry that the lighting isn't better. After looking at them, let me know specific questions you might have and I will try to answer them.

Found the answer. The pages in small print are the same as those included in the 7th thru 12th series version that you can get from PAC and are all original, indicating that PAC got ahold of an original and copied it. The large print pages are from a different version that covers a wide range thru the 14th series.
