Re: To restore or preserve?

This may or may not have any influence on your decision but just something to think about.

I had my car at our local donut shop get together one Saturday morning. Lots of people stopping and talking as this was the only Packard there. Soon this group of 3 guys were walking around looking at all the cars. I had left the drivers window down and ran off to get my coffee. Soon one of the three had his head in the window and stayed there for some time. Another one said "What the hell are you doing?" to which he replied, "I love the smell of old cars, it brings me back to when my brother and I rode in the back of our Buick with mom and dad". There was conversation about the boys not being able to see over the front see and not having to wear seat belts of course.

Pretty soon the other 2 guys were sticking their head in to get a good smell. When the guy who asked the,"what the hell are you doing", came up for air again he said "There is just something about that old car smell" They thanked me and moved on.

Later a very nice lady was looking the car over. She asked if I was going to restore her, I told her no that she was just a driver and wanted to keep it that way. She thanked me and said something like I was preserving history in a way. That sealed it for me. Preserve it is.

Does the 1918 truck have a GMC engine?

A couple of months ago, while at our local donut shop car show on Sat mornings, I was approached by man who's family has one of these trucks in storage. He said it came with a GMC engine as the gov't contract was made in such a way that Packard provided the frames and GM the drive train. Is this true?

What a wealth of info you guys are! I will check all these things. The cap that is in the picture is the wrong size.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Joeyearl,
Just found your blog tonight and read it all, had my dinner in front of the computer, couldn't stop reading. We have had similar problems. Electrical being one of them. Mine included having the rear end rebuilt, which we couldn't hear because of the worn out u joints.

Sorry to hear about your mishap with F 150. Don't know the extent of the damage to the trunk lid, but PackardUSA on Ebay as a trunk lid for $25 plus shipping. Just need your old hinges. There are handles, locks and chrome pieces all over, I think I would try Mike Borth, borthautoparts.com he has some good stuff and it nice to deal with.

Good luck and keep us posted.

May I throw my 2 cents worth in? Your picture doesn't show the screw very well, it appears to me its a drywall screw, dark colored and Phillips head. Also the white powder on the "Shim" on the right is suspect also.

How about a birds eye view of the pieces with a tape measure for sure?

Thanks for the information! I had no idea that there were different sizes of hubcaps. A little more investigation is needed on my part.

The tires are biased ply and appear to be properly balanced. I'll take it in to a tire shop I trust and have them checked.

Thanks again for your help!

So what's the secret? I am having a time keeping the hubcaps on the rear end of my '49, 23 series. Have take a hammer and long bunch to bend the tabs back further on the wheel, the caps go on great. Here's what happened while taking her to the local Saturday car show at the Doughnut shop.

On a stretch of rough road and driving real slow, it bounced off, hit the fender well and got partial run over.

Geez, it added the picture. Here are a couple of others.

The part number in the previous post I made is not the correct one after researching the Steele Products catalog.

Anybody have a part number and or idea where I can get new grommets for this?

Thanks,
Barry
