Kev, I used one quart of the Bill Hirsch paint to do my 356" engine. I had a local paint shop put some into a "rattle can" to do the head but I brush painted the block. I had just enough paint to do the whole engine with very little to spare. Brians idea about a detail spray gun is a great idea and I would go that route if I had to do it over again.

Elbow grease works best especially with a putty knife or dull screw driver as suggested already. After the heavy stuff is cut away I a wire brush works well and then solvents to get the residue off. Good luck.

The picture is a 356 engine and the oil filter was standard equipment ond not an accessory on this engine.

Kev, Congratulations on getting the garage up and running. Nice score on the vise. I only have a lousy 4" one and I would really like to get a good 6" one also.
The oil lines are obviously wrong as you mentioned. The one problem I see with the present arrangement is that the lifters may not be getting enough oil. There should be a T at the present oil sender fitting with one line going up to the lifter gallery inlet and the other line going to the upper fitting on the side of the filter. There is a restriction on the oil filter upper fitting which restricts the flow of oil to the filter to allow full pressure to the oil lifter gallery inlet. The oil pressure from the oil filter to the gallery as it is set up now might be insufficient . The lower fitting on the oil filter should run to another fitting directly below the T and this empties oil back into the crankcase. Attached is a diagram from a 1947 Parts Book but I think your car would use the same setup more or less.

Kev, If I can recall right I think that the Chrysler 300B had the most horsepower of any American car in 1956 at 355HP. Of course that was with a massaged hemi and twin 4 barrel carbs. I am pretty sure a V-8 Packard would outperform any of the straight eights in acceleration but not for smoothness and silent running. I can roll off the line in my 47 in 3rd gear and never feel it lug and then take it up over 100mph. Of course the 4:11 differential helps but the 290FT/lb. of torque at 1800 rpm and that massive 105lb. crankshaft also contribute to a smooth effortless take off in any gear. I had it up to 90mph last night on a quiet blacktop and she could easily have topped 100mph which is plenty fast enough for me. Give me a big straight eight anyday.

I'm sure most of you have read the performance test Packard used to hype the then new 356" engine in 1940 by comparing it to the V-12 which they discontinued in 1939. The 1940 car with the "new" engine won of course but there was no discussion of axle ratios and vehicle weights.

Thats a beautiful Clipper. Nice to see a car with blackwall tires also. What brand are they? Are they radials?

That is just what I'm looking for at the inlet side of my fuel pump. I have a plastic one there now but this would be better looking. Great idea! if it works.
