Attached is a picture of a "Fore aft stabilizer" in my 23 series. I have been wondering what to call this part to order new rubber pieces.

Sorry I am such a dummy at adding pictures to the post, someone told me how months ago and I'll be danged if I remember.

Is this part #333790?
Thanks,
Barry

I know its off the subject of Stewart's 55 but I was wondering about the Ebay brakes lines. Had the "Pumpkin" rebuilt in my 23 series while cleaning the grease and junk on the rear end (Still in the car) I found the right brake line crimped in 2 places. If I am going to replace 1 might as well do all of them.

Anyway, do you have to bend the lines to fit or are they ready to go? Any problems with them?

Thanks!
Barry

Riki,
You can not paint a license plate either, refer to section 4464 CA Vehicle Code, its a misdemeanor. I see a lot of guys are painting them lately, but CHP is catching on with the amount of classic car thefts. They can seize the plates and issue a citation maybe even tow the car. Your car might be held until a VIN inspector (CHP) has a good look. I can just see a street cop looking for the "VIN" on a Packard, most do not know. If your car is towed and stored until the VIN Inspector gets there you might be in for tow and storage fees also.
Good luck

B.

Re: VIN number

Hi Lars
I live in Cali also but it is pretty easy really to get the car registered. You will need a bill of sale (CA DMV form Reg 135) and have the seller sign it. You may need a written statement from the seller such as this was an estate sale, Lien Sale or from an auction company etc.

Suggest that you make an appointment at DMV and take what ever paperwork you have. DMV may issue a Temp Operating Permit (TOP) or a certificate of Non Op(Depending on what you choose). DMV will require you a "VIN Inspection" by the CHP (Highway Patrol).

You will need to make an appointment with CHP for the VIN inspection. They will request you bring the car to the office.
Sometimes, on occasions, they can come to you. My suggestion is to print off the information concerning Packards anti theft number and body number and give it to the Officer.

The CHP officer will inspect the car for all the numbers. He assigned a VIN, they have adhesive stamped plates they will attach to the car. The form he has to complete will note the location of the new VIN plate.

Keep your checkbook handy because both DMV and CHP will want to be paid! Don't forget insurance. A good rule of thumb, If the rubber meets the road you have to have insurance in CA in other words if the tires are on the street it needs insurance and current registration.

Good luck and welcome.

Re: General Trend for Parts Vendors (NOT MMY specific).

Here is something I have a bit of knowledge about, not car parts, but computer parts. UPS started it with its SCS Supply Chain Solutions. I was co owner in a company here in Cali that was part of UPS and later other Logistical companies.

We stocked parts for HP, Dell, Cisco and a whole host of others. The big computer companies make (or have made) the replacement parts and then turn them over with instructions on where to distribute (East coast, West, South etc) to Logistic Companies like UPS, Flash Global, DHL etc.
We would warehouse the parts until they we were order when and how to ship the part (Computers parts are 24/7/365 business, Walmart can not survive without their computers). This way the big companies HP, Dell, Cisco does not have to warehouse parts a cost savings to them. They do not have to man a warehouse and ship small parts. They only deal in Truck and Rail car loads.

We were a Field Logistical Support (FLS) to UPS - SCS.
Amazon and others use Order Fulfillment Centers, similar to what we did. If the center runs out of parts they contact the other center to fulfill the order. We often sent parts on aircraft to the east coast because they ran out of a part(s).

Hope this explains it better

Guess this one slipped through the cracks.

Was hoping to get some insight on the '49 differential.

Thanks for you help.

23 series Differential rebuild
Home away from home
Home away from home

Deskdriver
A few weeks ago while driving to the local car show, I heard what sounds like the u joints going out. Ordered new ones and made the changes. A little less noise, but....there is a lot of play in differential. The seal is bad and probably leaking for some time (There is oil in the unit).

So I am looking at rebuilding or having it rebuilt. Any suggestions? Should I keep the same gear ratio (2392 manual 3 speed) or change it? Any recommendations on a shop (Hoping Howard might know someone around his area he would recommend). I am pretty good mechanically and could install a rebuilt unit but not able to rebuilt the unit itself. I guess I can remove the rear end and ship it if needed (Thought it would look nice cleaned and repainted, but this car is a driver).

Thanks in advance for your help and resources.
B

I second HH56 comments about the electrical. The 65 yr old wiring is a problem. Be very careful behind the dashboard! I have my '49 running after looking for electrical shorts for 2 weeks. Got the lights, horn and other electrical all working, but I will need to install a new wiring harness.

Now it licensed and I drive to the local car show (donuts and coffee also) on some Saturday mornings. Get lots of looks and questions. May not be the prettiest girl at the ball with a bit of rust and peeling paint, but many come by and say "My Dad (Or Grand dad) had a Packard, I could just barely see over the front seat".

Enjoy, you have a great start.

This wasn't under the front seat but behind the ashtray on the front seat.

Now I can't wait to take the seat out to see if there are more treasures.

Sorry, I don't know how to add photos (scans) to the text message.
