Ok, I got my 4" aluminum disc, MIG with Argon and 5356 .035" aluminum MIG wire and an .040" tip. The grade and tip size help negate the need for a spool gun. (sort of)

I think I will preheat on a small grill and have a go at it.

I have been using these to recut valve seats.

A quick rotation will show if the seat is ok, then lap the valves if it is.

I noticed some structure that enclosed the impeller. You don't happen to have any pictures of what it looks like with the pump out?

Thanks for the info. How thick do you think the aluminum is behind the pump impeller? I ordered a 4" x 1/4" aluminum circle and was thinking of cutting out the back and welding that piece in.

Thanks for the suggestions. Did you have any issues with the MIG welding? What I was going to do is inset a 1 5/8" OD stainless tube in the ID of the water outlet, fabricate a ring of aluminum to slide over it and weld/epoxy it to the remaining housing.

On the water pump area, I was thinking of either filling or cutting out a circle and welding a new circle in. That is kind of why I was asking abut the MIG experience.

Austenitic stainless are non magnetic, commonly referred to as 300 Series. Lots of chrome and nickel. Ferritic are magnetic and are in the 400 series.

The last the engine was touched appears to be the early '70's, right at the start of the '70 clean air act.

I will go look for a logo.

I set up a strip magnet to hold my valves in order and found out that the exhausts won't stick to it.

Anyone know what they are made of?

Being a steel guy, I am assuming a lot of chrome?

I see Aircraft Spruce who is near me has a Velocity Visions aluminum cleaner and brightener, and I might give it a try.

The oil, grease is so thick I am starting with a plastic putty knife to start with.

I am trying to find something to brighten the aluminum, I don't want to paint it.

Thanks for the warning. I am using stuff from the Dollar Store and have not had any problems. I used it on my other "P" car, the one with 2 names and it was fine, but I will sill pay attention. I only leave it on long enough for the grease to show signs of running, a couple min. then wash with carb cleaner or lacquer thinner.
