Re: Power Steering Actuator Bracket

Bill- I got your message about the bracket and will try to get out and pull it on Saturday. I still have not figured out how to reply in the pc section. When I get it pulled I will send a text to the number you listed- assuming that will work and get your address. There is no charge for the bracket and I will ship via Priority mail and if you choose to refund the postage the banker will be happy.
Hope,I can help.

Packard 1948- I do not know your schedule for trying to do the power steering conversion. I am pretty sure that the accumulator bracket is still attached to the frame of one of the 1955 400 series parts cars. I am guessing that it is probably the same as the one Howard photographed .
If I am wrong, I am sure someone will tell me.
I will not be able to get out to the parts cars until the weekend but I know they all had the Monroe units. If it is there and you can use it- it is yours for the postage to mail it.
Send a note with an address .

64 Avanti- I do not believe we had to remove the fender to install the cowl to fender molding ...but we did loosen the fender to get it in. Might be possible to do it otherwise, but it was not that much of a chore to loosen things and get it in place since everything had been apart and no rust to deal with. Assume you are in a similar boat.

As of last October. Gretchen Keppich said she was retiring and would no longer sell interiors or tops. She did the interior kit for my Caribbean which included new side and kick panels which were well done.
The phone number was (336) 492-2286.
She might still be willing to do the panels or have the patterns.
Let me know if you have any luck.

Re: noisy speedometer

Has anyone run into a supplier who might have a rebuilt speedometer for the 55 400 or Caribbean? Looks like I will be hanging upside down and slashing my knuckles again. I have one or two used units but the used unit installed in my car seemed fine when I refurbished the dash but now it doesn't work. Since I do not want to ever do this again, I would, prefer to use an NOS or rebuilt unit.
I know that there are many listings in Hemmings for speedo rebuilders, I could go that route, but would prefer to not go through the delay.
If anyone has experience with a vendor who has done work on a Packard speedometer, please let me know-- in case that is the only option.

Owen- Thanks for confirming my recollection about the units at Hershey. I was not questioning that they were good buys.....supply and demand sets the prices. I saw a batwing aircleaner for a Chrysler on EBay a few years ago with a price over $4000.
I bought a 65 Corvette that no one wanted in August 1967 for $2400. It was a black/ black coupe without the standard disc brakes( heavy duty drums); fuel injection ; 4 speed transmission and 4:56 rear gears and worst of all a 36 gallon fuel tank. It had loud off road exhaust and a suspension that was so stiff that it made every tar strip feel like a kidney punch . I loved the car although the payments consumed over half,of my monthly take home pay. I used the car as my daily transportation for 3 1/2 years and considered myself a genius when I sold it for the same $2400. Today the injection unit alone would command at least 5-6 times what I paid for the car........and a recent Mecum Auction offered a 64 with similar equipment that hammered at $450,000. Another seller refused to sell a 63 with the same options for $550,0000.
I am sure there are people, out there with complete setups for the Caribbean that they purchased 30-40'years ago for a lark. If they sold them for $2000 they also considered themselves geniuses but today could kick themselves for letting them go.

I know nothing about WhitePost but if Ross will confirm the rebuild deficiencies asserted, I think that you should provide the information to the Consumer Protection Bureau and possible the Attorney General or District Attorney office of their jurisdiction.
We all get screwed occasionally on parts that do not meet expectations, but the BTV is an antiquated piece of technology whose inherent difficiencies have filled innumerable posts on this forum and others. Unfortunately, there have been few replacements offered that allow the use of the existing pedal location with its inherent 1-1 ratio.
The BTV therefore is a part that is needed to stop two tons of old steel moving at some speed. Anyone holding themselves out as a professional rebuilder of such a unit has a moral and legal duty to not allow that unit to leaves its shop without assuring that it will not endanger you, your passengers or the general public.
A "lifetime" warranty to repair or replace the unit is of little value to anyone who is killed or maimed because someone took a shortcut on the rebuild.
No one expects a rebuilder to be a guarantor of the product for life, but if the unit fails due to obvious shortcuts that render the unit unsafe, double your money back is not a sufficient remedy.
Excuse my rant but these folks are playing with lives in addition to our tin and I take that personally.

Just a note in response to Jack Vine's post. I do not know if anyone is paying the asking prices but I have not seem a complete dual quad set up with manifold, linkage, carbs and batwing aircleaner offered for under $4000 in several years . The air cleaners are being offered at over $2000 alone. I think I remember a complete setup at Hershey a few years ago for $4000 or $4500.
That being said, you can spend a small fortune to secure the parts to restore a Caribbean and a great deal more in sweat equity or for payment to a restoration shop to learn that the market has slumped and there are few Caribbeans fetching 6 figures.
I guess the key is to never let your wife see the receipts and just enjoy the cars for the joy of ownership.
As someone said we should be concerned about dying-- not because of concerns about the hereafter-- but fear that our spouses will sell our stuff for what we told them we paid for it.LOL

Re: Convertable top for caribbean 55

After a considerable delay, I finally got a swatch of comvertible top material from Bill Hirsch for possible replacement of the top on the 55 Caribbean. It took a while,to secure a piece of material that was white on the top and tan on the underside. Apparently the most readily available tops are white with black inner liner color which I anticipated would be difficult to dye to match the interior.
The original swatch ( white/ black) and the material used by Keppich for my original top was clearly bright white pinpoint. The more recent offering( white/ tan) is white but has a tan cast to it.
I preserved some material from the "original" top that was on the car when I purchased it. I cannot be certain that this top was original to the car or a later replacement but it is very thin and carries the light green underside which matches the interior......the problem is that this material though aged and dirty appears to also have a tan cast to it.
The white paint on the car is clearly white- white.
Before making any decision on ordering a top from Hirsch with the tan lining, I am hoping that someone can advise whether the original top color was white or had any hint of a tan cast. It would, appear to clash but I have seen a few cars with tops that were not bright white.
If the top is originally bright white, I have to keep searching for appropriate material
