Re: Good price, considerations for 1936 Packard 120 Luxury Touring Sedan

The car is now on my horizon. The seller seems to be honest and wants to finally sell the car. I offered 40K and he accepted that. To me the car looks like a #2 or very close to it with only a couple of paint chips in the front.

What has me puzzled is the LUXURY part of the name. Was there such a car in the 120B line in 1936? The doors are suicide types which I don't see on other 120 sedans so something is different.

The car is now in Utah and a bit far for me to inspect in person but I do see the pictures.

When I check the model numbers for 1936 I don't see a picture that looks like the model being sold with side mounted spare tires but these do show up in the 140 line. I'm really confused.

I went back to the car and got a hum out of the radio upon turning it on. Now I wonder if I can't get a station because of the aerial not going up. I'll have to play with it some more as I couldn't get the manual dial to work either - just the preset push buttons. I read through the RediRad site and found it very interesting. I will get that device as AM is not exactly what I want to listen to anyway. I don't expect to go on real long drives either but it would be nice to listen to some 40s and 50s music on the radio.

Thanks. I printed out those radio manuals and will take them over to the car to see if the thing even starts.

I guess for the antenna I'll need to go see a mechanic.

Earlier today I wrote a long post here and my internet somehow failed which caused my message to delete itself. Maybe that's good.

I have two questions: was there ever a red instrument background in the 48-49 Packards? I think I must have made that up in my dreams but it was so long ago and I can't separate reality from dreams any more. I had this '48 jet black super 8 convertible back in the 50's with red leather interior. At least I think it was the Super 8 and not the Custom 8.

Then I want to know if and how a radio can be brought back to life. At this point I don't even know how to turn the darn thing on but I don't think it works anyway. The antenna also needs to be fixed so that it rises up from the body the way it was supposed to back then - via the knob to the left of the steering column. What do I need to fix that?

So many questions and all this was supposed to be working when I bought the car but once the money changes hands and the vehicle has come off the truck, what is one to do?

Oy vey! Yes it would be the deluxe plastic cast in ivory. I thought maybe a clear liquid of some kind would able to meld the cracked surfaces together. A grand is a bit much for those tiny cracks.

I have four small cracks in the ivory paint of my 49 steering wheel. Is there some easy way of filling these before they get worse? I would hope this is a common thing and has been solved without removing the wheel.

Just trying bring my baby back to how it was.
Fred

You are spot on but being that manuals are rare in themselves I thought it appropriate that a copy of the proper manual that came delivered which a particular car/year should be saved and made available to the future. My '49 22nd series manual is a very generic version and covers some things and ignores others but it is what it is. Back then they seemed to worry more about how to remove spots from the upholstery rather than the actual mechanical features of each model they produced.

The other point I wanted to make was to inform the powers to be that the SUBMIT feature on the site software does not do anything except deny access.
