I'd suggest taking a closer look at the control rod system on the side the dust cover came off. The cover is spring loaded and typically won't come off. Inside the cover is a simple universal joint. If the pin in this universal joint shears, this would allow the control rod to separate and move out.

Congratulations on the recent awards for the work you've done on your car!

I'm in the process of getting Packard factory prints for the mud guards / splash shields.

I'll post a copy if they are the correct ones for a 901.

If not I'll take a few pictures of the ones on mine, and post them.

I'd suggest changing the condenser for the points, if this hasn't been done already. A common failure mode is a failure when hot.
