I have owned a 1955 Packard 400 since 2003. The best ultramatic that car ever had was the one it came from the factory it lasted 51 years until it blew up on the Pennsylvania turnpike. After that it was like a game of musical chairs with rebuilt ultramatics (3) none of which lasted more than 2 years. If some day your Ultramatic goes to that great auto salvage yard in the sky, here is what I suggest get a conversion kit from Bendtsens and a rebuilt 700r General Motors transmission. The cost for the conversion was about $3500 but from a reliability performance and gas mileage standpoint it was well worth it. My car now had more pickup and way better gas mileage that it ever had with Ultramatic.

Just one piece of advice if that Ultramatic starts giving you trouble replace it with a GM700r from Bendtsens transmission adapters and get the kit to make it work. Although it did cost a boatload of money to get done (about $3500) it made my car into a reliable automobile-and increased performance and gas mileage.

If you want to see how a proper torsion level suspension works look up Jay Leno's garage on Youtube and see his 1955 Packard Caribbean Convertible. Also There is a person in one of the Pacific Northwest regional Packard clubs that does a control box conversion for the torsion level system all solid state replaces the relays (no moving parts) I had that done to mine about a dozen years ago; my torsion level has been trouble free since.

If I owned a car like yours and had unlimited funds (which I don't) I would recreate that station wagon.

I think it did have a partition but just regular bench seats.

You know the more I look at your car the more I think that it could be the basis for a re-creation of that one-off Henney station wagon built in 1954 (see photo attached).

has anyone here installed a Petronix on a 356 straight-eight were you able to use the stock coil? were there any other issues? I had a petronix unit installed on my car with a petronix coil; it ran fine but I noticed on the way home after filling my tank (it was on E) my gas gauge my oil pressure gauge stopped working so I am wondering what happened? Oddly enough the ammeter gauge worked properly.
