That's good to know. I only did it once, and really noticed no difference. I'll keep at it.

Well, on the rear end. I assume that's what you meant. What do you need?. I pulled the back seat, and ran a new wiring harness up though and into the trunk. Like they would have for a convertible. I did run and extra ground in that harness as well as the power wire (capped off) for the rear of the car. In case some day I pull the headliner and re-wire the rear of the car. What picture did you need.

I agree there were probably some changes made by a particular dealer in California, and maybe a few others, but 95% will fall into the info I found. The main thing to remember is 22nd Series all start with prefix G, 23rd Series all start with prefix H. Suffix letters all fall after the end of the engine numbers hence the term suffix. According to the Packard International website. If the suffix (H ) was used by a dealer, it would be at the end (suffix) and stamped into the block. All factory hydraulic applications were only started by the Packard factory during the 23rd series, and had the Suffix (F).

I'm glad this helped. My engine code starts with H. Everyone keeps telling me that means I have Hydraulic lifters. Not so. All 23rd series engines started with H. The additional suffix codes are after the numbers. Just like all 22nd Series engines started with G, then the numbers, then any additional suffix codes. If I did have hydraulic lifters; at the end of the numbers there would be an (F). At least that's what my research shows.

Thank you Howard; There seems to be many opinions on which terminal to use. Maybe it makes a difference on the type of vehicle or tractor or what ever they are working with. But I only needed to get the information for a Packard. What would I do with out you sir.

Thanks Much

Polaizing the Generator

Hi Folks; I have questions about re- polarizing the generator. I believe I need to do this. The problem is; I have done my re-search on this site, and on others and continue to find conflicting information.

I have a 1949 23nd Series Packard with an Auto Lite system. Some people say touch the B terminal to the A terminal, some people say touch the B terminal to the F terminal.

So whats actually correct for the Packard?.

Thanks for you help.

Howard is correct. If you choose a pump please make sure it falls within the mechanical pump pressure. The MoTors manual for a 22nd Series mechanical pump is listed at 3/3/4 PSI. My car has the mechanical pump bypassed. It was that way when I bought it. The last owner said it was that way when he bought it, and he had the car for 10 years. Its just a small inline pump, no return. I recently tried to lean out the carb, the car is running way too rich. I couldn't make any adjustments. I believe the pump is putting out too much pressure. So this week I'll be putting in a regulator and gauge. Then I'll try to adjust the carb. So I.d put in a regulator and gauge as well. I purchased the two on amazon for $45.00 total.

While doing some research over the weekend I found some interesting info on Suffix codes and what they mean for the 22nd and 23rd series cars.

OK Howard; I was under the wrong impression I thought the oil in the filter would run back into the pan after passing through the filter to circulate the exchange of filtered oil back. I will read up on the Packard oiling system to better understand.

Thanks

Dave O
Yes; Howard you confused me. But I believe I understand you now. The oil will measure differently hot than cold. Which makes sense. Hot; the stick would show about 1/2 quart low because the oil inside the filter/canister has not drained back into the pan. Cold sitting, most all the oil should have drained back into the pan, and it should show to the full line on the stick.

Or visa, versa, a full system at hot would show 1/2 quart overfull at cold sitting.
What do you think?
