Hello, A possible cure to the problem of boiling fuel in the carburettor, would be to install an insulating plate between the manifold and the carburettor. if you make this sufficiently large so as to shield the bowl from the rising heat from the exhaust manifold it should help.

'38 120 choke thermostat

Hello Flackmaster, hope you are well. I am busy restoring the EE-14 csrburettor that i got from you. all is going well. As the bowl section is from a '37 120 it did not have the passage for the internal link between choke plate and its piston. obviously the link was also missing. I have fabricated the link and drilled the passage. But this still leaves me short of the choke thermostat which sits in the exhaust manifold. Max Merritt has a 2nd hand one for $150, this seems to me a bit expensive and with postage even more so. I think that you had one for sale. Is it still available?
I think that I now appreciate your reservations about EE-14, as the choke piston can quite easily 'gum up' and then lead to a stuck choke. By moving this mechanism to the top as in the EE-16 this problem would be addressed, as would the oxidation of the thermostat itself. Be that as it may, I am still very happy to have got the right carburettor. Thanks.
Regadds, dnielsen.

Hello Flackmaster. Carburettor received in good condition, thanks for packing it so well. I am overjoyed to at last have the correct item, which will add immeasurably to my car's authenticity. I wish to thank you for your generosity.
Please send me you banking details so that i can pay the postage charges.I think that one of our banks here has Paypal facilities but am not sure. If not, i can pay by credit card or send a bank draft. Please advise.
Regards. dnielsen.

Hello Flackmaster, sorry for the delay, but things have been hectic of late. I have this day made the donation [$100]to the forum. Please send carburettor to:
D. Nielsen, P.O.Box 228. Napier.7270 Western Cape. South Africa.
It may sound unnecessary, but please package it securely, our postal people are seriously ham-fisted.
Thanks,much appreciated. Regards dnielsen.

Hello Owen_Dyneto. Thanks for the info. I will try to find some sort of record of the Canadian production of '38 Packards,[in S. A. most American cars came from there]. If possible make an educated guess using my engine casting date as a reference,to come up with a production number. As to the rest I will scout around locally for dealers names etc. Regards dnielsen

Hello All, I have bought a patent decal from Andy Wolf for my 1938 120, but having never seen a intact one, i have no idea what numbers are imprinted on it. I imagine that the body identification number, in this case, 1192 plus some other number will appear, pehaps the fngine number? Am i right?. What style of impression or font was used? is it similar to the body number that is pressed into the firewall? If any one can help I will appreciate it.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Flackmaster. I aopologise for not replying sooner. I will glady accept your offer of the EE-14 shown in the photos. Your offer is most generous, please let me know what you want for it, so that I can do as you suggest and make the donation. Or would you prefer to include that with the shipping costs etc., so that I make one payment to you?
In any event regarding the packaging and shipping please pack it securely as our postal services are notoriously rough and prone to making things disappear. Whilst it may be more expensive I would prefer that you use a courier service. Having finally located a carburettor I would not like to loose it for the sake of some money for shipping.
Regards. dnielsen

Hello Flackmaster. I thank you for bringing my carburettor problem to a wider audience, the comments so far are most interesting. because of the small number of existing Packards in S.Africa this type of experience is not available. So i thank all of those who have given their views. As my car is a fairly original 120, except for the paint and upholstery [i have found an exact match of the material used] i want to restore it as close to original as is possible and practical. Therefor a Stromberg EE-14 or 16 is for me important. I accept that the 14 may be a bit troublesome but i feel that ,that goes with the territory and must be accepted as part of originality. My manifold is the correct one with a space for the thermostat. I have also noted 34PackardRoadsta's advice of the availabilty of the thermostat from Max Merritt.Thanks.
I thank you for all your effort and reaffirm that an EE-14 or 16 remains my choice. Regards.
