Some more temperature data....I drove the Packard to work today. On the way home I was cruising between 60mph and 75mph for about 45 minutes on the autobahn. Temp gauge was right in the middle. At home I measured hottest about 220 at the back of the head, 185 at the front and 165 at the radiator outlet. Hot? Yes, but I dont think it is too hot. Your temps are normal.
Also the gauge will read a little high or low depending on how full the gas tank is, since those gauges share a Power source, and seem to influence each other.

Splash fins go down. There are no stupid questions.

The oil pressure is fine. When the engine is hot, 10 psi at idle is still good, and pressure is limited to 35psi at driving speed. Nothing to worry about with the oil.
For the vacuum, that is a little low. You could cap off the vac lines going to the brakes, Choke and wipers and see if one of those is leaking more than it should.
Does altitude make a difference on vac readings? How high up are you?
Oh, and also try a second vac gauge. I also have a gauge (Stewart warner) that reads 3 inches low. You might have the same thing.

Paint looks great! I love the way paint feels after it has been "clay bared" and waxed.
If you think there is some valve noise, you could check the valve lash. That is not a very fun job, but is do-able. You will feel like a graduate of packard maintenance school when you finish the job. I think with mechanical lifters, there will usually be a little more noise than a modern car with hydraulic lifters. But before going through the effort of adjusting the valves, a gas tank or two of MMO would be easy to try.

Great work! glad the trans improved with the addition of fluid. The retro belts also look really nice.
Are these foam seals around the heat exchanger pipes just a good addition to seal air leaks from the heater, or were they also original? I am just trying to figure out if this is a small modification that helps a little, or if our cars came from the factory with something there.

Good point about that slight bend away from the exhaust manifold. I also have not suffered any vapor lock, but am kind of just experimenting with heat shielding. I may see if I can get a little more clearance from the manifold, that will not hurt.

Hi Ernie, glad you liked my first insulation attempt. That one is pretty invisible, and may only help a teeny tiny bit.
My latest exercise in insulation is a little more obvious. I will drive it for a while this summer and see if it brings any advantages or new Problems. It doesn't look very classic, but I did as neat a job as possible.....The devil will find work for idle hands to do. Not sure if that will stay. I don't really have heat problems other than a slightly rough idle when hot and heat soaked.

I had this heat shield off while adjusting valves, so before putting it back on, I thought I would apply some heat shield material. As long as it stays glued onto the bottom side of the shield, it should help keep the fuel pump a bit cooler.

I marked 90 degree increments with a magic marker (3, 6, and 9 O'clock) on the vibration damper, and that allowed me to more accurately place the crank/camshaft in the exact right position to adjust the valves....Cyl 4 was the last cyl I did on the first go around, and I had mistakenly adjusted the clearance to something like 015 instead of 007 or 010. Of course it was noisy! Now the valvetrain is nice and quiet again, and my vacuum gauge is nice and steady. Idle seems even a little smoother. As usual, it takes me 2 or more tries to get everything right, but persistence pays off. (Advice from the forum and Ross helps a lot!)
-Axle is also quiet again after tightening the nuts.
