Re: Torsion-Level Problem

Finally got the compensator off the Clipper. It wouldn't unload as recommended so I had to gingerly release the tension by loosening the mounting. Luckily there was not a great deal of tension and I'm still in one piece. My next step is to disassemble the unit to see what happened. I have a replacement compensator and arms thanks to Mike Dulinski. My concern now is how does the main shaft index on the limit switch cam? I'm hoping it can only go in one way but there is no information in the service bulletins or shop manual that I can find. Is there any other source that shows a rebuilding process?

Torsion-Level Problem

A month ago I took my 56 Clipper to a mechanic to see if I could get the torsion-level working. It was raising too much. We replaced limit switches and the level control. When the mechanic powered it up he wasn't watching closely and it kept churning up until it blew the fuses. When I got it back I crawled under it and both arms from the compensator were bent. I was able to get arms and a compensator from Mike Dulinski....lucky. Anyway I remember reading that the correct way to replace the compensator was to unload the tension on the arms. Thought I could do it by backing off the motor. I was able to remove the end plate and field frame ok but when I rotated the armature in the slotted socket there was no resistance in either direction. I figure parts are stripped out. My quandary is how to now get the old compensator off without maiming myself. At 70 I'm not as quick as I once was. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think this is the final rendition. The wording is from the blueprint. Thank you Bruce Blevins. and the size as scaled 1.625" X 4". In the process of getting a water slide decal made. So far I haven't seen an original so I'm guessing about the top lines.

Just got the packard blueprint. Air Cleaner was made by Houdaille-Hershey Corporation possibly Oakes Division out of North Chicago, Illinois. Print had wording for decal but no picture. Found another decal by them from the same period and have made up what I think was the sticker. Now to see if I can get a decal made.

Did a search on the Nash motor and came up with this picture. Looks to be like the Ford (bar across intake) but has thumbscrew on the bottom to hold it on to the carburetor. Clipper unit doesn't have this and is secured by the wingnut on top. See pic

They're slightly different as the AMC ones were for 2 barrels and had a different part number (6480801). I keep thinking it might have been made by United Specialties like the Golden Hawk one. Trying to find the blueprint in the hopes they note the mfr.

Does anyone know the manufacturer of the oil bath air cleaner for the 56 Clipper Custom. It's only used on that model (part # 6480939). It has an uncanny resemblance to the Ford Air Cleaner in 56..
