Still in progress is the muffler job, ran out of daylight and time. I did get the old one off and the add-on pieces that last owner used to fit a shorter muffler. Amazingly, the car is extremely clean and rot-free for it's age. Even the muffler clamps came off with no trouble and are reuseable. That's one for the purists. One of them I noticed is a different design than any I've ever seen before. Nothing special, just different.
Otherwise, charging system is still stuck on high-charge, starter cranks slow most of the time, and it still won't start without starting fluid. Those are all things for another day/week. It even moved about a foot and a half today before dying out.

This week, I tackled fuel pump and muffler. Didn't find a replacement around here but I did find the same kind of pump for a different car. I paid $10 for it and took it home and swapped the internals. The car runs on it and there's no leaks and that's all that counts. Also, the title came in for the car and I've noticed that it says foreign or out of country as one of the title brands. I wonder where it was from. It also has "A" for antique but the "F" comes first so it was antiqued later.

People will do what they want. I just can't see cutting a hole in a perfectly good roof and wrecking a headliner. At the least, save the piece in case you change your mind.

Actually, they look to be from a 47 buick roadmaster 2dr sedanet. Especially the light bar. 42-48 special, super and roadmaster. The only other cars of the 40's I liked. I bid on one a few weeks ago.

I use these add-on coolers on all of my regularly driven vehicles. They install very simply and do not require any permanent changes to the car. Another good type is the long narrow one that fits in a frame rail if it must be kept out of sight. Besides, using one of these avoids the radiator milkshake!

Where I live, the local government goes after unused cars rather viciously. If it is visible from the road and unregistered, you can't have it. In other words, you'd have to park the parts cars in your garage and leave the good ones outside. I've had to register every parts car I've had including my 59 Edsel. By the end of the summer, that one will have to be stripped and scrapped since my good one is nearing completion. The local car-nazis (sorry if that offends) have lately decided that any car that doesn't start, move forward and back under it's own power is also junk. If you're turned in by some angry neighbor, you have around 15 days to set up an appointment with an inspector and demonstrate the operability of all vehicles present. If a car is down for something major, say an engine rebuild, then I'd have to prove current repairs.
Lately, they've been gunning for 1975 and later cars. I've seen many perfectly good cars get scrapped because of lack of availability of emission parts. You could take a 1970 and 1979 thunderbirds and put them side by side. The 1979 runs 90% cleaner and at least 10% more efficient than 1970. Yet, they only gun for the 79. Go figure...
Our older and really old cars are less than 10% of the cars on the road and they're only 2-5% of all miles annually driven but they're the easiest target. Just like going after smokers for all of society's ills.

Good to know about the points. How about putting the numbers and info in the parts x-ref for the next time.

Thanks. I've saved the link for future use. I believe the mystery pump is a Blackstone replacement. The guy I know in Old Forge has thousands of NOS and replacement mechanical and electrical parts for cars from 20's up to the 70's for most brands. If anyone wants his number I'll give it to them. Usually he's got good prices. I just bought a hub puller from him for $50. I see that item go close to $150 sometimes.

If it helps, I have a 1948 with 288 engine and it's Grey. But only on the areas that aren't rusty.

This week's episode is "fun with fuel pumps". Every car I've bought in the last 10 years has needed a fuel pump almost immediately and this one's no exception. I removed the offending pump today to read the numbers off of it to either repair or replace it. Unfortunately, it's an aftermarket pump with no numbers. I know a guy in Old Forge who's checking through his stash of old parts to match it up if he can.
On a lighter note, I've discovered that the points and condenser from a 59 Edsel 6cyl engine are exact replacements for the ones in my Packard.

I figured that it was on high charge rate from running with no charge yesterday and from starting it. It should come down in a few minutes, I'd think, when charge is full. I only ran it a few minutes since there's no muffler and it's LOUD. I'll try the meter next time it's running.
