Based on past experience, I would exhaust your visual inspection opportunities before resulting to larger and larger tool$$$$.

I am not familiar with your engine, but if it is typical of straight 8's of the era there should be a side cover on the side that covers the valve/tappet gallery. Removing this would give you access to the valve and maybe a way to check to see if any are stuck.
If it turned before, then my guess is that there is/are stuck valve(s). The engine would turn enough until the cam lob started to come up and hit the stuck valve. I would take the head removal advice and try to figure which valve(s) should be beginning to open and concentrate on them. What I commonly see is the engine blows the head gasket, which allows water to the valves and when parked for extended periods, rusts them in place.

My cast iron heads were put on in the early '70's I think. I haven't looked for any markings on them. Thanks for the help. Bill

Thanks for the response. It is curious that the production of cast iron and aluminum heads were parallel. Begs the question, WHY?

I have a set of cast iron heads. The outlet valve to the heater is attached to the right water inlet.
I also have a set of HC aluminum heads and they have a port near the right rear of the engine, that looks to be for that application. I did some visual research and it looks like earlier (pre '38) cars have the heater valve off of this port. My question is, for the '30's V12's were all the aluminum heads the same, except for compression ratio? Also when did the factory start producing the cast iron ones?

I am turning my attention to my water pump.
Before I press the shaft out of the bearings, are there any set/retaining screws, rings, clips, etc holding the bearings or shaft in place once the pulley nut and pulley are remove and the packing nut unscrewed? Also, mine is painted black, is that correct?
