Black one does look kinda dignified. Don't remember the details of a Checker but white back end looks like a combination of mid 50's Stude, Packard, and Pontiac--not too terrible.

This car looks to be part '55-'56 Packard & '58-'81 Checker. It looks quite Utilitarian. I remember seeing them used in alot of movies whenever they needed to show the Soviet side of the world. I remember one in the chase scenes of "White Nights" & "Firefox" from the '80s. I watched these movies when I was a child and remembered how much these cars intrigued me. I wondered how much Soviet cars looked different than anything American cars. However these Tschaika's looked very much like cars I'd seen at car shows with my father.

This style is my favorite "bathtub" Packard. I hesitate to use that pejorative, because the rejection of the styling is, I think, a rush to judgment. I saw a beautifully restored sedan on the street the other evening, and under the lights alongside the "modern" cars it looked beautiful. But, it's a matter of taste. The design DID win a number of awards-- but not from car people. About that hole... I'll just add a couple of pure guesses: 1. There was another backup light installed like the one on the left. 2. Wherever that right bumper guard went, it could've taken something else with it... or left a neatly punched hole. I lean toward #1. Good to hear from Norwegian friends. You've got a lot of expatriates here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I'm yust a quarter, myself.

Hi

Actually, Bosque county in Texas , were I bought the house, there is a lot of people with Norwegian heritage.

Here is the city sign for the biggest city in this county.

I made two of them. I will take a picture tonight.
If that is what you need and you like what I made, I can make some more ore give you the pattern.

The contacts on the switch movable part, especially after cleaning can be pressed too tightly to the plunger. If you haven't already done so you might try spreading them apart so they make more pressure on the contacts.
Good luck.

Most 39-54 Buicks also used the same Carter switch so possibly one of their suppliers might be a source if no one comes forward with a better option.

I think I'd also be tempted to add a Ford type pushbutton switch in parallel with the original switch & hide it under the dash. You can at least drive the car while you find another one & it also works great if the car is flooded or temperamental in starting.

Well it still won't start BUT:

Thanks to HH56 for the illustations. I think I had the plunger in up-side down. The detailed diagrams helped to figure it out.

Thanks to 49 Pack for the linkage suggestions. I tried this first because it was the easiest, but unforetunetly, it didn't help.

Thanks to Owen, as always, the idea about jumping the terminals worked. The starter turned over! I took it apart again and tried to clean the contacts as best as I could, but it still didn't work. I guess I need to replace the switch or less there is another trick to try.

kanter is listing the part as $98 used or $195 new. This seems a little expensive. Any other sources?

Thanks again guys, you're the best!
