When I finally got my R-11 overdrive fixed up one of the things I did was take my solenoid apart and clean the contacts. I have some good info on how that works here if you'd like to check it out.
Pay attention to the link at "Kaiser Bill's" website.

I know that a professional paint dealer can come up with a PPG paint. Or custom mix it from PPG numbers. Good professional paint dealers will have books with data, dating back at least to the late forties if not earlier. Don't skimp, go to a paint supply shop that good body shops use. The paint is expensive, but well worth the money. If they do care they can also guide you to the proper primer to use etc. Don't use the cheapest paint or primer. Ten to fifteen years from now you will be glad you spent the couple hundred more.

If you find it is the solenoid it is esy to take them apart and clean and file the points to make them work again, ive done it to 3 of my cars with R9 and R11s. saves alot of time and money.

I'm pretty proud of the original "wood graining" on my '41 Clipper. Its in great shape notwithstanding some "left arm wear" on the drivers window. I'm not touching it...nice pitina I guess!

Dave
Wish I had started as early as you did. I have had my Clipper for less than a year. It has been a steep learning curve. BUT it is running this week! After consult with my local mechanic, whose dad was a Packard Mechanic. His highest compliment of the day on Friday went, "Dan we're going to make a mechanic out of you yet." I was teasing you about your 'backpay' for PInfo time. And I know this has got to hurt, (What a rottin' trick for a guy not from Jersey) BUT I was also teasing about 'buying' the Limo for you. OF Course, IF I had the resources ..... DanL

By all means, buy it for me! And I don't consider it pristine at all, there are so many original cars that are in better condition, and all too many of these will probably be restored when they change hands. Kind of a shame. But still it's a survivor with a story to tell.
I'm just short of 70 years, bought my first Packard at 18.

Its been a while, but isn't this the Angleset rear where the pinion is supported by both inner and outer double-row ball bearings? I seem to remember a dust shield that is outboard of the seal and I believe that's what you see, the seal should be behind it. If the rear end is quiet I wouldn't even think of touching the (crennelated) adjusting nut on the pinion bearing preload unless absolutely essential (see the locking tab on same under one of the bolts?).

I would think you would not have to remove any more than the yoke and the nut that held it on. The seal will be outboard of the bearing and ride on the outside surface of the yoke. I think I see the outside surface of the seal in your picture. The seal, without the proper puller, will be hard but not impossible to remove. Got mine out with a screw driver and a lot of prying.
Maybe the procedure in the book is for more than just replacing the seal. Sounds like it my be for removing the pinion all together.
