G'day Mal, have now! God willing, the Patrician, Bernice and I will definitely be at Mittagong next year.

Cheers, John

G'day all, thanks for your help, especially Randy for gently massaging my electrical knowledge and clarifying what's actually going on. With this knowledge embedded in my grey matter, the manual over-ride was attacked with renewed energy and it turned out to be quite a simple matter to get it operational after all, albeit without the automatic on/off switch disconnection.

I took a small momentary aerial switch and attached the pink and yellow wires to the up and down terminals, and ran a ground wire from the centre terminal to the dash. Works perfectly - all I have to do is REMEMBER to switch-off the on/off switch first. The manual switch is mounted on the bottom of the dash, about 2" along from the on/off switch, where it is accessible but not obtrusive.

Don't know whether to look for a factory type switch or not now. Interestingly, I did follow-up with Cole-Hersee about whether they still made these switches and they said no. However, about 20 years ago they contacted a lot of car clubs about interest in their old stock and got a nil response so junked the lot. Pity!

Previously, I eased my 155 pounds onto one end of the car to raise it, racing around to switch-off the on/off switch before the system returned to level. Now I notice the manual over-ride seems to be cranking further than it ever did with me on it, so I didn't take it to the limit (fear of the unknown!). Does anyone know how far the system travels before it reaches the limit switches?

Cheers, John

Thanks Randy, I'm a slow learner but starting to get the picture. Contrary to what I was thinking, the pink and yellow wires operate independently of the light green wire, and basically independently of each other. Presumably the only reason the LG wire is run through the switch is to make sure it is disconnected before attempting to over-ride the system. When you say the pink/yellow are grounded when switched, how does this happen? Is the switch grounded through the dash perhaps? Looks like it's back to the drawing board to re-modify this $5 switch, If I can't then I think Kanter or Merrit will be the next port of call (that confounded switch must be built especially for this purpose). Cheers, John

Hi all, and G'day to you to Peter - you picked me in one, although I suppose there's not too many '56 Patrician owners in Australia (3 that I know of).

Thanks everyone for your valuable advice. I did in fact look at the antenna switch from my '56 400 and, as it only had 3 terminals compared to the factory switch's 4, and the harness showed 4 wires, I assumed that it wouldn't work. Also, the diagram of the harness shows 4 light green wires but it wasn't clear to me how they all were linked together (I'm not much of an electrician).

Nonetheless, I have actually partially made-up a wiring harness and connected the 2 wires (pink and yellow) to the compensator brain box (ride leveller still works!), but have been struggling with how to do put it all together at the dash end. Both the harness wires are now "hot" (hope this is correct) so have been temporarily taped. This suggested to me that either should be used to switch juice into a light green wire but if so, which one and how, particularly if the on/off switch is turned off.

Realising that there are 3 hot wires to fiddle with, I did go a bit further and modify a brake before make, double pole double throw toggle switch, to a single pole triple throw switch (ie, On-On-On) which in theory would enable either 3 individually switched power inlet sources and 1 power outlet, or the reverse. Center position being allocated for the auto leveller and the other 2 positions for up and down. The only problem was that although the auto feature continued to work, the manual over-ride didn't, hence my current dilemma.

There is probably something really simple that I'm missing in all of this but for the life of me, I can't figure it out. Maybe the Kanter kit that Peter bought is the way to go but, having gone this far, I would like to try and get it sorted, if only to satisfy myself that I did it (conceding defeat doesn't come easy).

Yes, I will soon put some photo's and detail about my Patrician and 400 together and upload them.

Thanks once again for all of your advice, John

T/L Manual Control Switch

Has anyone any experience a obtaining and fitting a switch and the wiring necessary for a ride leveler manual control. I would like to fit one to my '56 Patrician and have found reference to one in the July '56 Service Counselor, but it assumes you have a factory switch and harness available for the purpose. I very much doubt that anyone over here in Australia would have them so I am looking to make-up something suitable.
Kind Regards, John
