Re: How to troubleshoot my overdrive?

Solenoid should not kick in when key turned on. Think the wires at governor reversed and the one for EC which breaks at speed is connected instead of the one that makes to bring in solenoid. One is on a rivet on the flat bottom and other comes out of the protrusion. I believe you want the flat one for OD. The 6V at SOL should only be there above 17-20 mph. Am a little confused about kickdown sw at it looks like 4 wires going to it--if not to switch, where are they going?

Thanks to all for the input. I got the relay installed and it appears to be working correctly.

The previous owner had cut the two wires from the O/D governor. I removed the governor, cleaned it up, and put new wires on it, then spliced them (best guess) into the two wires that had been cut.

Here's the current situation:

I turn on the ignition key and

(1) I can hear the overdrive relay and solenoid click in.
(2) I have 6 v on both the BATT and SOL sides of the relay contacts.
(3) I have 6 v on both sides of the relay coil (THSW and IGN).
(4) I have 1.1 volts on the kickdown switch, both sides. My kickdown switch has only two connectors, contrary to the switch in the schematic (which has four). That voltage seems a little strange.
(5) When driving the overdrive does not engage.

I'm ready to rewire the whole thing at this point, but am not exactly sure how because of the kickdown switch difference. It seems like it must be mechanically OK or the car wouldn't freewheel. I must be "close" at least electrically since I can hear the solenoid.

Should the solenoid click on as soon as the key is turned on? If not, I am curious why mine now does. Would mixing up the two governor wires cause this? It looks like the governor is no more than a speed-actuated switch, so I'm thinking that wouldn't make any difference.

I am completely lost on this right now. All help APPRECIATED!

Jay

"None of the body panels interchange, for example the rear doors are about 5 inches thick at the bottom, perhaps so the same door can be ..."

But are the outer skins the same???

"The engine block is about 1 cm longer than the 356 Packard so the heads, manifolds, crankshaft, etc. will not interchange though ..."

1 cm is about 3/8 inch. Not significant. Only a moderate feasability argument against I'change at best. The only way to know for sure is have cylinder spaceing measurements and crank comparison. Will the head I'change???

" built from the close of World War II until the mid-50s"

The cars were built from WWII effort surplus. Mounds and airplane hangers full of parts and tooling is my guess. I was buying WWII cushman and Indian among other non-Packard related surplus as late as 1990. Still packed in cosmoline and UNtouched since 1943-45 era.

Re: PS Pulley as drive for AC Compressor?

Hope someone posts better pictures. Here's 2 cars. Unfortunately, can't see damper on either very well and one car is well apart and damper looks disassembled. Sure wish I'd taken more & better shots but the AC wasn't why I was there that day.

The parts manual lists 3 dampers. 1 regular which would be l groove for fan & gen. 1 PS which would have 2 groves. As you see, the fan has a double pulley. Looking at Turbopackmans picture of the PS above, It appears it was the front belt over fan & gen and rear belt for fan & PS. I don't remember. The 3rd damper lists for AC in 54 junior cars. Wondering why separately because its the same damper as seniors--unless it's the pulley mounting holes. AC has a bolt on driving pulley on vibration damper.

Kev, this is what I mean: Summit Balancer

Then buy something like this to bolt to it: Ford 3 groove pulley

You can even do serpentine if you want, but remember one thing, if you run the back side of the belt on the water pump, it will run backwards and hence not pump anything. Serpentine's not for everyone, you have to be careful on how you route the belts, as we've all seen modern cars with the belt running on the backside of a pulley, which makes it run backwards. Just a thought to keep in mind when you're considering a serpentine setup. Now, you don't have to use a serpentine belt, but it's an option with the Ford balancer.

And yes, to my knowledge, all Packard balancers are zero balance, as the engines are internally balanced from the factory. External balance means that the balance it with the harmonic balancer on the front and the flywheel on the rear.

Xavier: Welcome to the forum.

One of the great luxury cars built before WWII was Minerva, which was constructed and built in your country. Which was know as SA Minerva Motors of Antwerp and Mortsell.

There are a great many experts on 55 & 56 Packard, here that freely give sound advice and help when asked.

well folks I bought the NAPA P/N SL-134 switch and it works great, oh by the NAPA said the cost is $22.00 because I bought it from a company store not a franchise (did know the was a difference) oh well if it keep someone off my rear bumper it is well worth it.

the switch mounts on the outside of the firewall
the switch comes in the "normal on position" so the leaver is placed behind the pedal rod, when you apply the brakes the lever on the switch moves toward the front of the car and the brake lights come on, also you need to bend the lever at a 90 degree angle to the switch and turn one twist in the lever so the flat side will ride on the pedal arm ..(hope I did not lose anyone in the explaination). There is not alot of room to work because you have to work around frame.

Yes PeterG I made that statement and stand by it. I believe I called you alot worse, when you revealed the contents of a private phone conversation we had a few years ago.

The bottom line is that I like the freedom of this venue. What realy is nice is seeing how freely people come forward to contribute information about Packards.

Brian,

Thank you for your civil response.

I am in agreement with most everything you said. Here are my comments:

Moderating - unfortunately it's a necessary evil. (Just ask Kevin - I'm sure he's eying this thread like a hawk) :) As to asking people to leave a forum - I'm not surprised they leave, I'm relieved: Ironically when a moderator does it to guys like PH they are applauded, but when others have the same negative impact on the community and are banned the Moderator is vilified. Why is that?

As to the old Misc Chat - deleting it was the best thing I ever did.

Yup... Kevin's misc posts (150+) provide links back to Packardinfo.com. Ironically I'll bet there a few here that are offended that I even post, let alone link back to AACA.

The AACA forums gets its fair share of good PR also. Rightly so IMHO, but I'm bias. :)

Thanks,

Peter
