Tom,
SS Badger as part of your trip is fantastic! It'll be like getting transported back in time cruising across the lake. I did however get caught to start with in looking up the route of your trip. In my haste saw your avatar showing Austin Tx and worked from there, it showed a 1400 mile trip nowhere near the lake. So went back and re-read your first post and Stillwater Mn was a much better fit. At least with things like this I'm learning more about US geography then I did before. And a little note, many years ago the former owners of my '38 went on a trip to Tasmania, the southern island state of Australia. Drove to Melbourne first, about 500 miles, then the ferry to Devonport an overnight voyage and got charged double because the Packard was so big compared to the other cars being carried!

Mal,
I am planning on taking four days. The neatest part I have figured out so far is the SS Badger. Other than that, no specific stops planned yet. Tom

HH56: YES!! THAT is the look. I love it. The bolts that hold the bumper and its supports to the frame are all under the car, and I THINK the sheet metal screws that hold the bumper gravel shield are all hidden under the rear trunk bodywork, so this SHOULD be as easy as:
1. Remove bumper with its supports from the frame of the car 2. Remove the gravel shield by removing the sheet metal screws that come into it from under the trunk 3. Mount a license plate bracket with built-in lamp or LED to light it, and mount the license plate to the bracket TurboPackman: Clsoe but not quite correct. First, this particular car also changed the chrom piece above and around the signal lamps to body color. I want to keep that piece chrome, along with the bumper. ONLY the chrome piece onto which the signal lamps are mounted should be body colored. Secondly, the fact that the body color on your sample car is NOT black craetes an entirely different look. I want that central chrome piece to blend into the "black" radiator area, so that attention is focused on the upper chrome piece that follows the hood line. THAT is a Packard trademark I don't want to lose, and want to HIGHLIGHT. Jim G

Tom,
Sounds exciting. I hope all the emergency tools and supplies stay where they belong, packed away or in the trunk! And to get a little away from the gist of the post, it's a loooong trip so how many days of driving are you planning? And will you be taking in the sights and places of interest along the way, especially Packard ones as West suggested?

I have one of those big plastic storage bins in the trunk when on a highway trip in my '47. In it are
Tool box with set of wrenches, set of 1/4 and 3/8 drive sockets, adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, channel lock pliers, needle nose pliers, vise grips, , misc. other odds and sods and small can of radiator sealer crystals Ka-Bar USMC knife Can of tire inflator/sealer. Road side reflectors and several flares Refective bright orange vest Disposable coveralls Can of waterless hand cleaner and paper towels Fire extinguisher (also one in car) Flashlight with spare batteries Tow strap Spare fuel pump (car also equipped with electric pump) Spare points, condensor and distributor cap Spare fuel filter. Fuses and spare light bulbs ( my car has halogen headlights) in the glove box. We travel with a cell phone, Credit cards, CAA membership card and GPS unit. Not much room for luggage! Oh I almost forgot did I mention fly dope!

I remember driving down I-24 on the downside of Monteagle, just west of Chattanooga, in the fast lane in the 1930 Packard 734 when I heard what sounded like a shotgun blast. It was the right rear tire.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I am also going to add a couple of those reflective triangles and a couple of flares. I blew a tire, at night, on I-10 a couple of months ago. Of course, it was the driver's side. Wow, was that exciting!
Cheers, Tom
