The 1942s (all models) eliminated the dash-mounted starter button in favor of the gas pedal start system (which was introduced on the 1941 Clippers). So it looks like, at one point, =that= failed and a dashboard starter button was installed.

On the passenger side of the engine, check the oil pump and the exhaust flange. The 356-cid (Super Eight) has a 6-bolt oil pump and a 4-bolt exhaust flange. The 282-cid (One Twenty, or "Eight" that year) had a 4-bolt oil pump and a 2-bolt exhaust flange.

All of the 1951-54s had an oil light. All of the 1955-56 seniors (except for the 1956 Executives) had an oil gauge.

Richard Arbib's personal Pan American also had a top. (None of the other Pan Americans did.) Arbib's car is pictured in the Spring 1975 issue of "The Cormorant." This photo will be republished in the upcoming history of the Pan Americans, which will be in a future issue of "The Packard Cormorant."

The article is in error, as the very first PanAm built was "updated" by Ed Macauley in 1954 (with a new grille and a '54 dash board) and again in 1955 (with the '55 Senior rear end). This was originally a 1951 "250" convertible #2469-3630. It is now on display at the National Packard Museum. Ralph Marano's car was built from a 1952 "250" #2579-2963.

Alvan Macauley lived in the Indian Village section from the late 'teens until the late 1920s; his address was 1801 Iroquois Ave. The photo in the AQ Packard book on pages 128-129 showing him in his library was taken at this home -- which is still standing.

The last car built in Detroit, Patrician #5682-4775, was shipped to Guntersville, Alabama. Here is the copy of the bill of lading from the Studebaker Museum.
