Re:Packard Pics

Hey Mal

I've been trying to contact John Parkes without success. Last news was he went bush up north after his wrecking yard was flooded, and lost a lot of his stuff. Apparently, he also had cancer so he may no longer be with us. His wife does not know his whereabouts.

No result yet on the engraving effort for the data plate. Very slow, not that it really matters.

I had a look yesterday at some of the cars being auctioned by the defunct Gosford Classic Car museum. Posted a note in the General part of the forum.

Cheers

Brian

Thanks Mal - good to see.

John Parkes restored the car when he was living in Tweed Heads. Looks like he was a member of PACA.

It's had a bit of tweaking since then, but the original work has stood up very well.

Don't know where John is now. He'd be getting on. Would love to speak with him, although Dale Collins said he had forgotten most of the details of the rebuild when they met some years ago (including the whereabouts of the data plate!).

Cheers

Thanks Mal. That's a good lead.

I went hunting around today. Came across a rather odd European chap (professional engraver) working in a trophy shop in Crows Nest. He thinks he can do it and will make me a sample on a piece of his own alloy plate before we decide. Will let you know how it goes. May be of use to others.

Cheers

Thanks Owen. That's an option which had never occurred to me. I'll look into it.

Yes, I understand the importance of keeping the old plate.

Looks like this is a hot topic on the forum, and it is obviously controversial. At the end of the day, what matters is preservation and enjoyment of the cars. Sometimes that requires the use of reproduction parts. I know that does not logically apply to data plates, which I think of as just another element of cosmetics. My preference would be to see data plates restored, wherever that's possible. If it's not possible, then a reproduction can fill the gap on the scuttle.

Cheers

VN Plate Stamping

Does anybody know where I can get a reproduction Packard VN (data) plate stamped? I have the blank plate and the details for it. Tried to contact NorthEast Packard by email in response to their advertisement in Hemmings, but no reply. Does anybody know if they still do this, or any other source for this service? Cheers Brian

Chris it's definitely a push/pull switch, but may be incorrect. I would have expected a rheostat.

Re: 1941 Club Coupe Instrument Light Knob

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. The switch is definitely a push/pull and fairly stiff. Possibly from lack of use. It appears to be a late '41 build. Perhaps they were using Clipper knobs by then? Or maybe they were changed later. They are painted cream and look like plastic. They are the rectangular shape. Maybe I should just put something on the shaft to stop the knob falling off, and stop fiddling with it. I rarely - if ever - use the instrument lights. The other knobs are all the same, and work fine.

Thanks for the replies.

1941 Club Coupe Instrument Light Knob

The instrument light knob on my 1941 Club Coupe comes off when I try to turn on (pull) the switch knob. I have the knob, but can't see how it grips the switch shaft. Anyone have any knowledge of this? Maybe need a new one? It is rectangular shape and looks like pot metal, but is painted cream, like all the other knobs. There is some sort of metal clip which slides over the switch shaft (with a flat on top of the shaft) but it doesn't clamp onto the shaft.

1941 Packard 120 Clock

Brian Wilson
The clock in my 1941 120 Club Coupe is not working (unlike all the other instruments, which are in good health). The clock looks fine, but has just stopped working. I gather this is a reasonably common problem. The car was converted to 12V a while back, and I wonder whether this may have damaged it? What is the best approach to fixing this? Try to fix the existing mechanism, or replace it with something more reliable?

Cheers

Re: Conversion of 120 rear lights for turn signals etc

Brian Wilson
Thanks for all the info, guys. Very helpful.

The Powergen product looks pretty good. There's something similar made locally in Australia, but I'd probably end up with one resembling a Lucas generator since I don't have an original generator casing and don't know what brand (Delco etc) the car originally came with. How hard would it be to find an original generator - presumably non-functioning - as a donor item?

It never occurred to me that there might already be wiring in the loom for turn signals. I'll investigate more closely, and see whether I can rig up something where the brake light doubles as the turn signal lamp. That would avoid changing or modifying the rear light fitting. Yes, there is theoretically an issue with amber vs red rear turn signals in Australia, but having them integrated into the existing lamps makes them less obvious (and the car predates the design rule requiring turn signals). To me, it's more a safety issue.

I'm about to post another question, about the clock.

Thanks again Brian W.
