1899-the first Packard. It can still be seen at Leigh University in Packard Hall.I had the pleasure of seeing it run at a Concourse they held there in 1999.

My 55 Imperial had 10 times the rust of my 55 Packard. They both were sold and existed in the same area for 20+ years?
So how is the Imperial better? Don't get me wrong. I think the th 55 Imperial grill beats Packard, but te 400's rear end is far superior.

I owned a 55 Imperial Newport hardtop in 1975-77 and a 55 Packard 400 from 77-79 and the Packard in my mind was a better car. Both cars had seen better days and the bodies and paint left much to be desired.Of course back then they were just old cars. The two cars together cost me about $500.00.The packard had a better ride, better handling and for my money, a better transmission.I got about 13 MPG on the Chrysler and 16 MPG on the Packard. I must admit that I did appreciate the electric wipers in the Chrysler.

If your brakes pull, its because they are not adjusted properly.I am glad to hear that you drive a Packard as a daily driver.

I own a 48 Custom Eight with Manual brakes and a 56 Patrician with power brakes.I live in the NYC Metropolitan Area where people drive like Aholes. Both of my cars will stop on a dime as straight as an arrow. Why would you convert? I have a friend who has a 34 Standard Eight with mechanical brakes and it stops better than both of my cars.I think it just a matter of how you drive and how you maintain your car.

Owen.I know what you say about the Custom Eights is true as I own one, but I must say that my 56 Patrician is just as good. When I drive that car, I feel like I am sitting on my living room couch. Maybe it is because the suspension is superior. Then again,I could have a terrible living room couch.

As I was driving my 56 Patrician I thought, over the lifter clatter, that these cars represented some of the most innovative Packards ever made. I believe they rank right up there with the classics of the 30 and 40s.If they had been one of "the big three",they would still be around today.I know this sounds like sacrilege.Any Thoughts?

I have to agree with Randy. It was the Studebaker-Packard corporation.I have never understood why the name was last when they actually bought Studebaker but its "Not for me to say".They are great road cars.In fact, besides the Golden Hawk, no 57 Studebakers are supercharged yet all 57 Packards are supercharged.

Owen is right.I have neighbors with Ford Explorers and Chevy Suburbans but they drive a Hondas and Toyotas to work.Another issue: Union benefits.Let us not forget that the unions are responsible for the growth of the middle class. It was my father's union benefits that paid for my health care, dental care and eye care.It let him make enough money to buy a house and put his kids through school. The union's are the reason many other non union companies and banks etc. started offering their employee's benefits. These white collar workers looked down on these workers and said they would never do "that kind of work".Now that they are losing their jobs to people in India and China who will work for $3.00 a week, they cast a jealous eye at the people who are doing "that kind of work".I bet everyone I know would be glad to give up the benefits they have if we could just have the same ones our representative's in Congress get.
