Thanks for the photo O.D - just another thought : both of the handles that have failed on my car were "first issue" handles - I understand that a "second issue" was introduced fairly early on in production of the 22nd Series which had a second screw through an extension of the back plate casting. This screw went though the extended back plate and was visible on the outside - perhaps someone has had some problems with the second series too if so we need to know - or are ALL the failures of the casting occurring in the first series ? - if the latter then perhaps I should be looking for the second series handles as replacements I'm sure they MUST fit ? That then leads to a question : how and what was the second screw fixed into ?

Having taken my offending handle off the car the problem was that the casting was broken, not just a broken spring.

My Restorer thinks there's very little chance of removing and replacing these springs anyways as he thinks the casting would break under the pressure - even if we could find or make a correct spring !

Thoughts please - and anyone out there got some handles ?

Just today discovered that one of my external door handles stays "popped out" - I assume that there is a spring somewhere within the door trim attached to part of the door which stops it from popping out - has anyone had the same happen to them and does anyone know the accurate return spring location ?

No that would not work - my car is RHD and despite being fitted with the correct "American" style long thin and high battery originally (which would have covered the hole) -very early on in it's life that would have been discarded and the traditional "British" style battery put in as the "American" style would not be available in Rhodesia where the car began it's life.

The original long thin shaped battery tray now has a different tray over it to accommodate the U.K style battery which being less in height does NOT cover the hole or indeed sit snugly up against the hole as the original would have done.

Any more thoughts on this welcome.

PHOTOS ADDED 1) SHOWS VIEW FROM WHEEL ARCH THE OTHERS ARE SHOTS FROM ABOVE LOOKING DOWN ONTO THE BATTERY - YOU CAN SEE THE REMNANTS OF THE OLD TRAY AND THE TRAY OVER THE TO WITH THE BATTERY INSITU.

Thanks for that info.

So do I leave the hole as it is and put up with any water/dirt getting into the engine bay or has the passage of time meant it has proved to be safe to close off the hole to keep everything water/dirt tight ?

Hi Everyone - after nearly 5 years of ownership of my 1948 Packard 22nd Series I have just realised that I have a rather large hole under the hood of my car. This hole is behind the battery location so looking upwards with the front right hand wheel removed I can see the side of the battery - the hole is about 12" long and about 6" high so if I ever take her out for a run in the rain water and any dirt therein will enter the engine compartment. There are some small holes on the edge of the hole possibly for self-tapping screws to secure a small panel to cover the hole.

The latter is a simple job, my question is what was this hole for ?

So if mine is not just serviceable (?) it can be "re-built by a Specialist" - that means I have to find someone in the UK who can do this for me - so the search is on.

Never mind after 5 years I MUST be getting near to the end where she looks pretty good and also starts, runs AND gets to Shows and fingers crossed she gets back home. We'll see.

Much appreciated - now I know all 22nd Series have 'em I can ask the next thing on my mind - the damper is leaking so I presume there is a seal similar to those on a telescopic shock absorber ? if so how do I take the thing apart to repair the seal ? or is it a sealed unit that has to be thrown away and replaced ? Here's a photo with the offensive "thing" just showing behind the telescopic shock absorber - seems to have a rubber bump stop on top ?

My RHD 1948 Packard 22nd Series Six has a damper to the chassis end of the rear stabilizer bar (anti roll bar) - is this a thing fitted to all Series 22 cars or just to the "colonial" cars bound for Africa and other remote outposts with BAD or NON-EXISTENT roads of the world as they existed back in 1948 ?

Thanks Brian - really good point - I would have gone along with doing the windings and then come unstuck with the solenoid - many thanks.

Not the same subject but the same car - I need the two clips for the firewall that hold the hood "steady iron" when in the closed hood mode, any chance you can source for me as you have done in the past please ? P.M me on that - Thanks - All the Best from the UK
