'54 Convertible Front Splash Apron Trim?
#31

Just can't stay away

Another newbie question: on the front splash apron between the body and the bumper on, either side of the center of the grill, which is painted body color there are several tiny holes (almost like staples have been removed). Is there supposed to be a piece of rubber trim or filler attached? I can find no pictures or diagrams in the Parts and Accessories List.

Is there a source reflecting how many '54 Convertibles were manufactured as automatics and how many were manuals?

Isn't there a fill line in the reservoir so as to avoid overfilling?

Servicing Electro-Hydraulic Reservoir

I am servicing a recently acquired '54 Convertible. The service manual says when refilling the reservoir to have the windows lowered. My car does not have power windows but obviously has a power top which is not mentioned in the service instructions. Does it make any difference if the top is up or down when I remove the bail from the reservoir to clean and refill?

Re: Grounding a Gas Tank Sending Unit

My car did come with an electric pump installed. I never considered that the fuel line would/could be the ground. I will try clamping a ground across both ends of the pump before drilling into the flange around the tank. With my luck...........Thanks.

Grounding a Gas Tank Sending Unit
#36

Two weeks ago I dropped the tank on my '54 Convertible and installed a new sending unit. The old unit was bad and as a result the gas gauge did not work. I made sure there was no paint under where the sending unit seats and ground paint off the underside of the upper cradle where the tank sits and the top of the tank itself where it meets the cradle. After the install the gas gauge worked fine. The car than sat for two weeks and the gauge did not work. I ran a ground wire with alligator clips at each end from the fuel line where it screws into the tank and a bumper mount bolt and the gauge works. The wiring diagram shows the sender grounding at its interface with the tank. What am I missing?

I am jumping in at the end of this thread so I apologize if this has been covered already. Does the ground strap get hot
when the engine is cranking over, albeit slowly? I once had a brand new ground strap, that looked completely normal, have some internal flaw that caused cranking issues. During the troubleshooting of the slow cranking issue I leaned on it and it was hot. I replaced the ground strap and the car immediately turned over at regular speed and started. From the pictures, your ground strap could be suspect. I spent hours trying to figure out the problem which turned out to be cheap and easy to solve. I still have that ground strap which I have used at tech sessions to show that new parts are not always good parts.

Thank you. I have also confirmed this with pictures from an unrestored car.
