Thank you for this information. I was able to locate the brake light switch, and I cleaning the connections; as they appeared somewhat corroded. Seems to be working better and more consistent, now.

Inconsistant leveling system on '56 Clipper

Just can't stay away

The leveling system on my '56 Clipper does not work consistently. Sometimes it will work within the 7 to 9 second delay; sometimes is takes 30+ minutes to work. Two years ago I had the compensator control disassembled and the contact points cleaned, and it worked well for about 6 months. At that time, the mechanic suggested that I may need to replace the compensator control. Before replacing the compensator control, should I look at some other (perhaps less expensive) part replacement? I'm thinking that the stoplight switch may be something less expensive and easier to replace, and may be a good next step. I'm also thinking of installing a manual override switch. What are others' thoughts on the direction I should go?

Looks like a bad freeze plug. The oil is fine - no water. I got under the car this morning, poured some water in the radiator, and watched it dump out the freeze plug in the front of the block adjacent to the motor mount. Ugh.

Is it possible to replace the freeze plug without pulling out the engine? The service manual doesn't give instructions on replacing freeze plugs - at least I didn't find any.

56 Clipper cooling system leak

Just can't stay away

Last weekend was running errands in my car. Steam started coming out from under the hood. Pulled into the driveway, turned off the engine, and open the hood. After letting the engine cool for about 20 minutes, I opened the radiator cap and noticed not water or coolant. I started filling up with coolant and water, and water just started pouring out the passenger side of the engine compartment (side of engine where generator interior heater are located). Radiator hoses are fine. No leak from the water pump area nor water pump manifold - that I can see. Pouring water into the radiator results in immediate emptying of water/coolant from the bottom area of the engine.

The service manual suggests a possible engine head or manifold crack. The oil dip stick shows some signs of watery oil. Could this be a head gasket?

The engine still starts and runs fine. Any thoughts on possible problem and how difficult it is to repair is very much appreciated.

Wanted: Brake Drums for '56 Clipper Custom

Just can't stay away

Ken Hill
I'm looking for a full set of brake drums (2 front and 2 rear) drums for my '56 Clipper Custom. New ones would be great, but I'm sure they are hard to find. Used drums that have been refurbished/turned will also work.

I'm also in need of the rubber break lines for the two front wheels.

Do you have what I'm looking for, or can you refer me to someone you may have what I'm looking for? Any help you can provide is much appreciated!

I thought about turning off the leveling switch as you describe. The owner's manual says to turn it off when jacking up the car to change a tire. I think I'll try your idea.

Re: 1955-56 Trunk lid hinge problem

I had this same thing happen to me on my '56 Clipper last summer. I ordered a replacement hinge, and my son and daughter helped me replace it. The paint color of the hinge does not match the car, but I'm not too worried about that. Replacing the hinge is easy; it is a little tricky get the lid to line up with the trunk. If you have the service manual, then there are instructions in there showing you how to do this. Good luck!
