The amount of wear on the sealing surface of the hub is somewhat surprising. (Maybe the angle of the picture makes the wear look worse than it really is?) I wonder if at some point the seal was installed way off center to the hub sealing surface?

I was taught to always center the seal by bolting it on loosely, then slipping the hub/drum on to center the seal with the sealing surface. Then carefully remove the hub/drum by pulling straight out, and finally carefully tighten the fasteners.

Now for my cars with tapered axles, I have a bare hub (no good drums were sacrificed, they were bad already) that is used to center the seal, so the bolts can be tightened with the hub holding the seal in the correct location.

Kevin, if you follow Ken_P's advice, I would also suggest that while that axle is out and the bearing off, you check it for straightness. You may not have the correct tools to do this (a set of shaft rollers to support and roll the axle, and a dial indicator to make the measurements) but a general machine shop should be able to do this quickly. The outer end at the taper would be the most suspect. A alternate method would be to mount the axle in a lathe between two live centers; the machine shop might prefer this method.

I suggest this due to the damage/warping of the brake drum - something significant happened to cause that, and to me at least it makes the axle suspect -- at least enough suspect to check it for straightness while it is out and the axle bearing removed.

I'll second what Ken_P said in regard to the U-joint. That U-joint looks pretty crusty and since it has no provision for greasing, it likely could be your culprit.

How long has the car sat since it was regularly driven?

Replace (or at least disassemble/clean/inspect/grease) the u-joints now, versus having a failure on the road! Even if that doesn't eliminate the squeak, you have eliminated a potential problem 'down the road' by applying preventative maintenance.

Good deal Kevin. That fact that the parts store was able to turn the drum is significant. Now the braking surface is concentric with the hub, and should be fine. Keep your eye out for a good replacement just in case, but good chance you won't need it.

Hmmm, the first photo shows the Clipper outside on what looks like snow and sitting very low with non stock wheels. Other photos show the car in an original state.


First photo is either a different car, or a highly photoshopped picture. Note the first line of the ad says "CAN LOOK LIKE THIS".

That '53 Clipper looks like it could be a very nice car with some detailing. And manual with overdrive - sweet!

What would the original interior material have been? Anything close to what is in there now?
