"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out "torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt. Average torque load to loosen nut:

No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds (must be damn big bolt)
WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix...................... 53 foot pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price.

ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid.

This version of the story was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters.

I'd still be content with my 32 Custom Imperial LeBaron dual windshield phaeton

I just couldn't justify adding material on all four sides. It was just made too small to be any value to me. I wonder if a piece of pickup truck bed or van flooring might offer a better starting place. . .

I purchased a replacement trunk panel from C2C via ebay for one of my 21st Series Packards although it was advertised for the 22nd Series. There was a caveat concerning excessive trimming which I interpreted as a wry understatement.

1) The recesses required for the rear body bolts were mere shadows of what is required. 2) There is not enough material to form a flange with which to weld the panel to the body. 3) The floor reinforcement ribs aren't...unless you are happy with shallow grooves.

Obviously the part is poorly planned and executed. The thickness was fine.

To their credit, they accepted the return and 100% refunded my purchase. I was going to eat it but I decided if enough people return shoddy merchandise the vendor might improve the product.

Left side view, under the hood molding. (The hole in my photo is in the hood.)

I think the hole in discussion might be used to connect opposite fenders during assembly and subsequent installation onto the car.

Thought y'all would enjoy seeing this car before it is spruced up for display. Wasn't able to get the info on the data tags.

Curious as to the opinion of the assembled masses for a modern match to 1947 Cavalier Maroon Metallic. I'd like to see and verify the match in person. Thanks
