Engine Oil Capacity
#31

Hey folks, I am running into to conflicting information on the oil capacity of a 23rd series Super Eight with a 327 engine. Its time for an oil change.

The Owners Operational Manual says 7 qts.
The Packard Service Manual says 5 1/2 Qts unless it has an engine suffix of CD -CE -D or E then its 7 Qts. My engine suffix is (H)

The MoTor's manual says 6 Qts.

What are you folks doing.

Wiring can be very frustrating. Howard's info is perfect. Although I have a 1949 23rd series, my headlight switch is identical to the picture Howard gave you. What I find curious is the instrument lights switch gets its power from the from the Headlight switch. The instrument light switch can only turn on if the headlight or Parking light switch is on. So, if you believe the headlights are on, just not receiving power, you should still have dash lights. Very perplexing; After checking the wiring for the Headlight switch. I am wondering if the dimmer switch is wired right. Just a thought.

I chose PVC heavy Jacketed, tinned, Marine wire. I found a reasonable source out of Florida for it. I could get all the color codes and striped colors plus sizes I needed very reasonably. I can't say if it has had any effect on the the gauges because I only drove this car once before discovering the wiring issue. However they all seem to functioning fine.

Finally; After owning this Car for twenty months, and a complete rewire. With two fire extinguishers and a hose ready. I put power to her, and no smoke, or sparks. I tested each system and all were working properly. I turned her over with no spark, or fuel until I had oil pressure. Then added spark and fuel, and off she went.

Thank you all for your help during my wiring project, Its been very educational.

Thank you all for your tutorial. I have never been much of an electrical person. But I enjoy learning as much as I can and find it rewarding and stimulating. Once I understand it, I've got it. But sometimes I just feel the need to understand it. During the total rewire of this car there were many times I didn't understand why Packard spliced where they did, but I just followed the schematic and didn't question it too much. I'm getting close to being done, there will be no old factory wire left in this car. I just hope I didn't screw it up.

Thanks again, you all make me feel much better when I question something.

Fist off thanks Howard, secondly; so what does the steering column horn switch do in relationship in the the relay. There is full 6V power in the relay from the battery. There is an open point system to operate the horns. Does it connect power to the open point to close it?. It can't be a grounding. So many questions.

Hello to all; Can anyone tell me if I have the correct wiring info on this horn relay. I looked at the schematic, and labeled what I though was right, but now I am second guessing it. I labeled it H- for the Horns. B- for the Battery and S- for the switch on the steering wheel. Should H- and S- be reversed.

Yes Dell; I could really use that tank sender for my 49 Super Eight. Let me know how you want to go forward.

I did jack up the rear of the car yesterday. There were no bolts and studs in the area behind the fender in the trunk rear. However I could see where the holes where they should be in.

So I guess we were all correct. I have only two, but there should be four. I still don't understand why the light housing didn't loosen after removing the nuts. But I think we should put this mystery to bed for now. I sure appreciate all your help in this and all my rebuilding issues.

P.S. Only a few more wires to pull and connect and the total rewire is finished!. Then I'll cross my fingers hook up the battery and watch for smoke, ha.
