Vibration

My 55 400 suffers vibration between 30 and 40 mph. Tires balanced, no flat spots, drive shaft u-joints OK, can find nothing, however the camber on one front wheel is excessive. Today my mechanic noticed that the water pump seems loose but not leaking and that the power steering lines are moving, possibly as if the pump was pulsing. Has anyone ever experienced this behavior? The engine was not rocking or vibrating while these two events were occurring.

It's driving me nuts. Any help will be much appreciated.

Synthetic motor oil is great for many engines, but does it not seep through the rope seal on the rear mail bearing of the V8 engines? An Amsoil distributor I met says no, but I'm a little leery of a non-tech supplier's knowledge.

Another source in Pittsburgh is Applied Industrial Tech, Inc. 5536 Baum Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15232 - (412) 681-4900.I bought Timken axle bearinags for my 55 400 there several years ago. Very reputable supplier.

Is the Fel Pro BS 60413 the correct one? Riki mentioned it didn't look quite right.

What is a suitable grease? AMSOIL grease?

One of the Packard Clubs had a national meeting in central Pennsylvania that I attended some time before Three Mile Island became big news. One of the speakers was the engineer who developed the torsion bar suspension.

During the Q & A period, he responded to a question on lubing the TL links. He had advised Packard not to bother, that lubrication was really unnecessary. He removed the boots and lubrication from the links on his car to make his point. That may be the reason lubrication was not recommended for the 56s.

My intent is only for priming. I've never had a V8 Packard suffer vapor lock. In some of the reading I did recently, one writer used a push button switch. That would assure that the pump was not inadvertently left running.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Is anyone using a zinc additive with either synthetic or natural oil? Mention was made that Mobil 1, at least sometime in the past, had zinc from the refinery. Does it still?

Amsoil makes strong claims about long life, etc. Has anyone experience with it?

When gasoline was still below $1.00 a gallon, a friend had a fuel oil business (home heating oil). He tried Amsoil and found it saved a couple of gallons of gasoline every day. It also burned about a quart a day of oil. Since one quart was more expensive than two gallons of gas, he only tried it once.
