I found this on another thread from last month:

Yes, the precision length crush sleeve sets the preload for the pinion shaft bearings. Count exactly the number of turns to remove the nut and install it exactly the same number of turns, no more - no less). Carefully mark the nut and the housing to establish installed position.

Pinion seal

Ok, so I just recently (within the past few weeks) had my Clipper's pinion seal replaced (along with trans and oil pan gaskets).

The old pinion seal previously had a drip which got worse over time to become a full-blown puddle.

I just stopped by my garage and noticed that there is a quantity of gear oil underneath the differential again. Prior to returning the car to me,the mechanic held the car for an extra day or 2 to check for leaks and drove it, put it back up on the lift to verify everything was ok. This is the first time I've been back to my garage in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Short of improper install or part failure, what is going on here? I purchased the part from Kanter just prior to the service so it was definitely new. Should the seal be bone dry or do they just leak? I'm thinking something isn't right here.

JW,

Thanks for the advice, that work has been completed and the car is smoother than ever (and I thought it was pretty good before!) The mechanic said that the transmission pan had about a half inch of sludge in the bottom.

I just learned that I'm clear to take a few days off so I will be there, arriving Thursday afternoon, and through Sunday at the Lockard's truck meet.

I just checked and it sold for $40,700 on August 31. It was a former Communist party limo.

Saw this pic on Mark Hyman Ltd. Facebook page. Apparently it was at Auction America's event in Auburn in late August. Not sure if it sold or not.

If you'd like to create a tool kit for your Packard or other vehicles, I came across this listing of metric and standard interchanges so as not to have to carry a bazillion wrenches around. Also helpful in the garage if you're metric impaired like me

53 Clipper minor maintenance

I have my Clipper in the shop for minor maintenance I can't get to right now. I found a local guy that was working on a '55 Clipper a few weeks back and had been previously reccomended to me by a co-worker so I finally had a chance to drop it off.

What he's doing for me are an Oil Change, Pinion seal, Oil Pan Gasket and Trans Pan Gasket replacement.

I am providing the parts as soon as they get received from UPS (Via Kanter). I do know the tranny takes type F Fluid so I'll mention that to him.I also know there is no filter in the trans, just a screen that needs cleaning.

Is there anything specific the mechanic should know before he does the jobs (Clearance issues with the pans, things to watch for, etc.)

I'm planning on taking one of my 2 Packards up to Hershey (although not on the show field, then heading to Dave Lockard's place that Sunday) so I figured its a really good time to get moving on these nagging issues.

Laughing at the "Wife" story. I think I have my wifey convinced that we need another Packard. Looking at a 47 Super Clipper or Pre-depression car.
