Is the direct drive clutch located in the Converter?

Henry
so here is what happens
we take off in High,I take the car on the freeway and it gets the high rpm`s and is not able to go past 50 or 60 ,the RPM`s are loud and the car seems to Bog ,when we brought back to the shop we could smell a slight clutch smell.
Theory ,or conspiracy theory.
Could the clutch be bad in the torque converter preventing us to take it to that smooth highway speed ,and the engine runs quiet?

Thanks for this deep analysis of the Ultramatic. In trying to determine the issue ,I am still troubled in understanding a few points.
As the converter reaches higher speed ,the converter clutch engages.AS the car reaches the 20 to 25 ,does the high clutch in the tranny then transfer the tranny into the direct drive as you say and it is now in direct drive IE: it transfers from the high clutches in the tranny to the high gears?

Howard ,
Thank you ,so what im trying to understand in a basic way.
1.WE only have a high band

SO when I am in Drive or High or normal ,is it the torque converter that actually changes the gear ratio at high end
when i am aproaching 40 or 50?
Im lost a bit on how does it operate as follows is my limited understanding

I start the car from a stop in a high gear low ratio, until I start to reach 50 or 40 MPH and then the Ultramatic changes the gear ratio.
Is the gear ratio changed in the Torque converter or in the transmission.
The sequence of events in my shop is
We changed the Tranny to what we thought was a good tranny ,but used the existing Torque converter because the new tranny torque converter had a leak. The car did the same thing.

ok ,so.....now I think im getting somewhere but still a bit confused.
What is the purpose of the linkage from the carb to the lever in the tranny that has control of ,what i thought was a valve lever in the tranny.
I know that the feeling is im at high RPMs ,and in the other ultramatics i have always felt a shift going onto the freeway to a higher gear?

Team
I am in H and i thought it has 2nd and 3rd.
The car stays in 2nd and never goes into 3rd?
Could it be the Torque converter?
We manualy turn the lever connected to the carburator linkage and no change ?We checked all the valves when we opened up the traanny and they all move freely
Any ideas?
why does the torque converter have a clutch between impellers ?

Thanks
first i do not have gear start .
seqence of events
We had a problem with the tranny dropping into high gear.
We pulled the tranny and found the valve was stuck that sends fluid to the high gear.
Then we put it back in ,still the same problem.
Then i put a spare tranny in ,howver we put the Torque converter from the bad tranny into the new tranny ,cause the torque converter we had on the replacement tranny was leaking.Same thing agaain.
The question I have about the torque converter.I notice it has a clutch built in .What is that all about ?could it be that the clutch is bad in the orifional torque converter and that would have something to do with it ,i am lost on the converter ,is there a low and high impeller and thats the reason for the clutch,it looks like we have impellers on the converter that are clutch friven and we do not have a clue.

I have the following problem ,any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I can not get the 1954 24th series transmision to drop into high gear. This tranny has Low ,thats fine .Then when Im in normal ,i think its drive, the car runs fine in second gear but I can not get it to drop into 3rd gear.
WE checked the linkage but not sure how assure its not the linkage .
Could a bad Torque converter do this ?
We cleaned and checked all the valve body and the governor ,and all seem to be operating normally .

Is their a service piece that defines how to set the linkage?

This is the final thing to get my car on the road ,can anyone help here?
Kevin
