QUOTE "Your car idles in neutral and park at the right rpm right? Idle not turned up? Have you ever driven the car and not had it stick? If so, then that'd kind of rule out any major linkage misadjustment.

Also, pay attention to the speed at when the converter locks up. That would rule out tv linkage adjustments also. Just food for thought, you're likely just going to be servicing the governor. ""

The idle is good and yes it was shifting great. I think it locks up around 38mph. This is where it was originally set and it hasn't changed.

Do I have to keep stalling it to get the trickshift into the valve ? Is it good enough to flip it into neutral just before stalling ?

Thanks again
OTG

Well I put 6qts of trickshift in it and it is still stalling. Good news is I am getting real good at hitting neutral at 11mph. Your right about it turning into
"mr toads wild ride" if you put the car in drive before it completely stops.
Going to keep running it with the trickshift for a little while to see if it clears it up although I never was a big believer in a can of fixit.
Is it involved taking the governor out ? Never did one and haven't had time to review the links above. Any hints and/or suggestions about doing this ?

Thanks
OTG

Wow.. thanks for all the advice.

I will swap the fluid with B&M trickshift. Anyone know how many quarts this will take. I am assuming the TC will have to be drained also. Will I need a new filter? (Assuming it has one .. know where I can get one ?)

Thanks for the info about shifting into Low. I did that last night to get the car home. Didn't realize it was harder than flooring it in High. Shifting to Low is tricky since the infamous "R"ace setting is the next one down.

Now that gets things excited. Actually know someone in an old car who shifted all the way down to find Low but found Race instead. The guy behind him wasn't very happy.

Will let you know what happens. JIC anyone have any pics of the governor and instructions for a R+R? Not that I would mind paying Ross a visit.

Thanks again

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like it is going to be a little involved to fix. Hopefully I can keep driving it like this and not destroy anything else.

Ultramatic will not let go when stopping - 1950

Always something. I have a '50 with an ultramatic.

If I am driving along in "second gear" and I stop for a light the car bucks-n-dies. Like driving a standard and forgetting to push the clutch in when stopping.

If I am in "first gear" I can stop normally and it doesn't do its buck-n-die act.

If I am in "second gear" and I put it in neutral prior to stopping then I can put it in drive and idle for the light to change then proceed. No problem.

The trans upshifts normally and smoothly. Problem occurs when it is both hot and cold. Has fluid.

Any ideas on how to fix this ?

Thanks

I have the second and third also. So thats what the cable is supposed to look like. Mine had a big knot at one end. 8)

So the "typical" that was listed for a '51 is the one here (#3)? and the correct one for mine? What is the part number for this one ? Saw a couple on Max site.

Did you ever remove+reinstall the cone #2 on yours?

I am going home this evening and putting the speedo gear in the housing #2 and slide it into the trans. I am really concerned that the gear will slide off and into the trans housing and cause me a world of grief. Any words of wisdom?
At least cable #1 comes with the gear etc attached not a problem there .. done a ton of those. No brainers.

HH Thanks for the input. I saw the "typical" cable and the years. Your right the one I have has a metal oval shaped housing that the gear slides into. This housing mounts to the trans with a plate and 2 bolts. Will check the vendors .. didn't know about David Moe will check there also.

I need the whole assembly. Somehow the inner cable twisted the outer shielded into a knot and broke both. Imagine that.
I am batting a thousand with speedometers lately. I checked a few vendors online but didn't see anything like the one I have.

Ross; So if I put the gear in the housing and insert it everything should line up. No Surprises ? When I removed the gear there was a pretty big void in there which makes me wonder. Thanks again.
