Thanks but as it is so many issues with the Ultramatic and nobody here in Spain who knows how to work on them it has to go. I did put it in L but braking was not enough. Sometimes we have downhill for 20-25 min on narrow and bendy roads so I need to have good brake from the engine. Last year an Aston Martin from 2006 got mushy brakes going down that special mountain. I also lost the brakes on my Mustang some years ago at that place. The problem with the Mustang was that you could not lock it in 2nd gear and 1st was too slow.
As for the gear ratio I do need better transport speed as I sometimes need to go 1,5 - 2 hours on the highway (max speed 75 mph) just to get to the meeting point in the morning.
I noticed that I put this post in the wrong group.. it should have been in V8 (55-56) ... sorry.. Can it be moved?

Gearbox 700R4 in Clipper 5647

As my 2265-9 is getting finished I start to plan for the 5647. As our car club has all our meetings up on mountain roads I don't dare to take my 5647 to them. I experienced a loss of brakes due to overheating taking it for a test drive a couple of years ago. It's been on a lift in my garage since then :(
I seriously thinking of swapping the Ultramatic for a 700R4 with a Bentsen adaptor to get the possibility to use engine brake and also better miles/gallon (0,7 to 1 ratio in 4th).

Any opinions/experiences on this?

Problems solved. The man who did the gearbox had done something wrong putting it together. Now it works with no problems. The O/D also works as supposed.
The clutch was too tight so after loosing the adjustment a bit the noise stopped.
At the moment the car is in a workshop to change all seals on the rear axle due to leaks.
Hopefully I will have it all ready for a 5-day run in end of April.
Thanks All of you beeing here helping out when needed.

So I disconnected the link arms and it's the same when I put the 2nd or 3rd gear in. Transmission locked. I guess it has to come out and be opened again. The clutch I can't see anything wrong but I have to try it when engine is running and someone pressing down the clutch. I was alone checking it.

Thanks Ross,
the top cover from inside is no option for me. Glued carpet.

I'll check the other things during next weekend. I don't think I have time until then.

1st and reverse works. It blocks when I put the 2nd or 3rd in. The engine and gearbox came out together. Clutch and pressure plate is new. Bearing and push out collar new.
Engine and gearbox put together before going back into the car.
Now talking clutch. When I press the clutch pedal to the floor it sounds like its touching something like a gear.
Can the problem be in there?

Hi again,
I can put it in to 2nd and 3rd but when I try to let the clutch up the engine will stall (I have only let the clutch up a little bit not to damage anything in the gearbox). I will disconnect the rods and check.

Hi you great source of knowledge,
I have had my gearbox in to change the sync rings. Now it's back in the car but when I put it in 2nd or 3rd it's totally blocked. Any ideas? Have they f*cked it up reassembling it?
Thanks
