I would diagnose the problem first. The wiper motor should be rebuilt if found to be lacking, rather than using the procedure as described. If the vacuum pump on a V8, which is attached to the oil pump, is not working properly, it will not provide adequate vacuum AND it may interfere with the propoer operation of the oil pump, which MIGHT cause an oil aeration problem, as it did on my '55 Clipper. I installed a double action fuel pump on my '56, which works well. Stop gap measures, instead of following proper procedures, will at times add to the problem. There are several other areas that may cause vacuum problems. One is worn hoses, hoses of improper size, including those to the power brake and vacuum tank, a vacuum tank filled with brake fluid, and a faulty check valve at the back of the carburetor, which provides vacuum to the power brake unit. Our Packards are all at least 56 years old. Using rube goldberg procedures is improper maintenance and care. Treat your Packard as you would a modern car and have it repaired properly, by using proper diagnosis and maintenance procedures.

Air conditioning was first offered on SIX VOLT cars!

I have a Sanden compressor on my 1954 6V Packard, with a 12V clutch, that works perfectly on my 6V system, under all conditions. The Sanden technician said it would, and it does. That is a FACT. My 6V blower motors work PERFECTLY! My Packard does not overheat in the summer when the A/C is on. Packard designed the car so that it would not overheat under any circumstances.

"Overheating" should never be an issue with any postwar Packard that is at factory specs. Overheating is often in the mind of the owner, rather than a reality. I define overheating if there is boiling in the radiator or coolant loss. A temp. gauge pointer that is close to H does not necessarily mean the car is overheating.

There are companies that retrofit antique cars with a/c, either 6V or 12V. There is no need or reason to change to 12V. You should NOT use 134A refrigerant. Instead, use R414B or equivalent. It is a replacement for R12, with the same characteristics, and offers superior performance to 134A, which can cause excessively high temps. in the condensor. Any refrigeration company can provide R414B to a licensed a/c technician.

Any retrofit a/c should NEVER damage or permanently change any feature of the car that cannot be easily and inexpensively corrected.

Classic Auto Air is in Tampa, FLhttp://www.classicautoair.com/

Old Air Products is in Fort Worth, TX

Major changes to an antique car can have a serious impact on value. Many changes can be costly and unnecessary. Be careful what you do.

Black Bess was, in fact, a pre-prototype. It was built as a test vehicle to determine how well the new frame, steering and body components performed at the Proving Ground. It was not built for any other purpose. More protoypes were scheduled to be built, but alas.

Dwight Heinmuller
Hello all:
I am working on a book on the 1957 Predictor-style Packards. These are the cars that were completely styled and engineered, but never produced. It is not about the 1957 Studebakers with Packard nameplates.
Any information on these cars would be very helpful to me, and credit will be given in the book.
I am looking for:
1- photos
2- documents relating to these cars, from Styling, Engineering or other departments
3- renderings from Packard Styling
4- stories about Packard from this era, from visitors to the factory and from employees
5- antyhting of any consequence
6- quarterly reports to shareholders from 1954, 1955 and 1956
7- Lehman Bros. report on Packard from c1952
8- news articles on Packard from any source
Thanks for your help.
