Re: Oil Pan drain plug

As far as I know, just a couple of dimples in one of the years, that wasn't present on the other. I DO know that a Hudson pan will NOT work at all!

I believe the trans pan does have the same plug. I also have a spare '56 trans pan, and can look at it when I get home.

It's too bad your car doesn't have Torsion Level, as the ride's better than any air bag could ever be.

As for the Olds oil pump conversion, I'm afraid that it's going to have to stay with the same name, we've known it as that for so long, it would be a shame to change the name now. If we change it to anything, I'm thinking "The PV8C oil pump conversion". I'm not giving either Melling or Oldsmobile credit to what has to be the best thing to happen to Packard V8's since they were developed in the '50s, that a few inventive members of The Packard V8 Club developed, and put into production. If Melling were to come out with a direct bolt on Packard V8 pump, that would be another story entirely.

Also, there's no cover-up intended for anyone on what we do at the Packard V8 Club. All that we do (more or less, some things that we do with our significant others are less public!) will be displayed on the PV8C site in due time. I still have to take more pics and do a write up on the supercharger installation, and start documenting my AOD trans modifications, whew! It's a lot of work to be in a club!

If you're bung's worn out, and you can't get a different one to work, try this:

B&M Trans plug kit

I've used these before on modern auto's, and they work great.

Future Projects Of Packard V8 Club Members

I decided to start this thread for people who would like to name a project that they will/are/would like to be doing. Basically, now that we have done the Olds oil pump conversion, the SN60 Supercharged Packard V8, and I'm presently working on the AOD-T/U, I was wondering if anyone else might have any ideas, or suggestions for future projects of the Packard V8 Club, with an accompanying how-to article to be posted there. Any and all suggestions will be welcomed! No awards for "best project", just an enshrinement in the Packard V8 Club Hall Of Fame!

Also, something that a lot of people don't know, is that the '55 lenses are clear, while the '56 lenses are opaque. It always made me wonder if people who bought a '55 complained that they were being blinded by the light, as even my '56 is rather bright, and they're opaque. Or if they happened to change suppliers. Now, they will interchange, that is, fit in the same hole, but there is a difference between them.

Not very hard, just don't lose any parts, and blow out every passage, and you should be fine. Easier than a four barrel, a lot less pieces. I'd recommend getting a gallon can of carb cleaner from O'Reilly's, called Berrymans. Pretty good stuff, comes with a basket to pull your parts out with. You definitely don't want to get it on your hands, as it burns like he77!

Quote:
BTW, a fellow in Kansas recently resurrected a '56 Patrician from a field that had been fitted years ago with a '55 Twin Ultra, and with nothing more than a fluid change or two, it is a reliable daily driver.

That fellow would be me. And yes, all I've done to the trans was put in a new converter to pump seal, fill it full of fluid, changed it a couple of times, cleaned out the trans screen inside the pan after I put 6000 miles on it, then finally filled it up with B&M Trick Shift. Since then, I still have a direct clutch grind, but not near as bad as before. The problem with my direct clutch is that the friction material has hardened, and isn't gripping sufficiently. That's the only problem I have with the trans, and if you just simply let off the gas a little, it goes right in.

Now, as to the rest of the story on this trans, yes, it's a 1955 model with the cast iron center. The real neat thing about this is, that it sat un-driven and in a field for over 40 years! I started driving it on a daily basis in August of '05, and I've put over 13000 miles on it since then, and it's only let me down once, and that was New Years day of '06. (It was the crankshaft key that's described on the Packard V8 Club website) All in all, she's been a damn dependable car for sitting in a field for that long with no one to care for her.

Eventually, I plan to make a four door Caribbean out of her, to show a "what if" idea that could have happened in '56 if Packard had more money. The only difference engine wise will be that the Carib's had a dual 4 barrel setup and mine is already supercharged.

I too had this problem, and solved it by removing the tan wire on the automatic park relay as per the "auto park relay removal" STB that I got from BH. I have to remember exactly what it entailed, but it solved the problem completely. Before, it seemed as though every single wire would short out. I still don't know what caused it, but I know it's working now, and has flawlessly for over a year. (and knock on wood it continues to do so!)

Eric
