I actually touched the valve stems with the stethoscope. Rest the side of the stethoscope stem against the valve as it goes up and down. That seemed to do a much better job. Putting the stethoscope just on the block near the lifter was not nearly as telling. Ross if he's watching may have more advice.

But not to say that I'm completely done with my particular job as the engine is still not back together due to lack of time.

IIRC that's to raise and lower the power antenna.

Both Max Merrit and Kanter sell rebuild kits, and also rebuilt pumps with exchange.

This really helped. I thought I'd done it right the first time, and it ran very roughly, because I think actually I was off by one cylinder. I did it a second time very carefully and things smoothed out.

My understanding is always to torque cold and with dry threads, e.g. no anti-sieze or other lubricant. Is that correct?
