The speed/rate that the Bendix engages with the flywheel is independent of the condition of the ignition switch, there is no fast or slow. A sticky switch may keep the starter engaged longer than it should be perhaps resulting in a burned out starter

Check oil level, fill as needed and run engine. Then try adding an extra quart. Some engines have an oil foaming problem which is remedied with the extra quart. Cheap fix.

I'd say even-steven with jack stands. A 4000 lb car on sturdy jack stands will not budge. Jack stands have been used for the past 100 years.

When up on stands there's much easier access with a creeper or on your back
