I would advise against using a 12V jump unless there is absolutely no alternative. The Bendix can slam the gear out with such force it will crack/break the nose cone.

I believe the Packard manual actually covers the stuck starter gear issue, suggesting rocking the car and letting out the clutch. Rather difficult to do if you don't have a couple able bodied guys around though.

That wolf is cool, nice spot, Guscha!

Nate and Keene was in the Greenus Building, 500 E. Pike, Seattle. Photo taken from the intersection of Summit and Pike looking east up Pike. Fire hydrant is still in the same location.

I'd love to own any of those Packards!

Doesn't seem to me the block could be original to the car, the shape of the area around the manifold ports is utterly different than the block on my '30.

These are for sale on ebay. I can't place what year/model they come from. I'm curious, does anyone know?

The oiler valve should allow oil to flow to the cylinders only when the choke is fully engaged. Is your oiler valve on the passenger side of the engine behind the exhaust pipe? Here is a photo of my 1930 valve before I connected the linkages. If yours is similar I could take a photo of the valve with linkages connected; the weather is currently warm enough for me to access the car.

The spring shown in the photos is not original. There was no spring on the passenger side of the engine.

1930-31 distributor shaft/advance/cam assembly removal

Has anyone disassembled a NE 10868 or 10896 distributor to the point of removing the shaft/advance/cam assembly? This would need to be done for a re-bush job. How does it come apart? Is there more than one way for the cam/rotor to be positioned in relation to the shaft? Thanks for any info.

When I googled vacuum advance or related terms, history of, and so forth, very little came up. Perhaps someone more computer savvy would have better luck. All I could find was a reference to it being on cars since the '50s. Thanks for clarifying it is on '39 Packard, Chris.
