Can someone please point me to normal compression test values for a 1931 Packard 840 (super 8 engine)? I’ve seen a couple of forum posts on the internet suggesting 80-85 as normal, but I can’t find an official listing. Thanks!

West- thanks for your reply. I do have an electric prime pump, but the massive leak is occurring using only the stock mechanical fuel pump.

I'm getting my 1931 840 back in starting condition. I'm working on several issues, but I had the carburetor rebuilt with a rebuild kit from pac-carbs.com, and now I've got a massive leak. It looks like the bowl is overfilling, and I probably need to adjust the float. Any other ideas- The 2 minute video of the start and massive leak can be seen with this Vimeo link:

Hi David- thanks for the thread reference. Sounds like the starter end caps have an innate engineering defect. Nice to have the sand casting company reference: alcast-foundry.com. Appreciate your input.

Thanks guys- looks like I've lucked out- I spoke with Jason Smith at AER, and he has a spare that he is going to clean up and repaint for me. Good lesson in the unforgivable fragile nature of cast iron!

Would appreciate your input on my self imposed disaster that happened this weekend :(. I was installing my beautifully restored Owen Dyneto generator CL896 in my 1931 Packard, and I must not have had the splined shaft correctly aligned and seated, so when I was snugging down the nuts, it created so much pressure on the endplate that the endplate cast iron cracked and broke in two-- ughh!!!

I'm contacting Jason from AER to see if he has a spare part lying around, but was also considering 3D printing a replacement part. Has anyone had any experience with 3D printing such a replacement part or similar part? Not sure you can 3D print cast iron, but maybe there some similar metal alloy that would be compatible with cast iron in this environment- heat expansion/contraction

I posted some of these photos on another thread about drilling out a broken manifold stud, but thought I should also post here as it completes the journey of re-porcelainizing my 840 manifolds. Prairie Auto Porcelain knocked out of the park. Now hoping that the porcelain finish holds up!

What a great link- I love the color the truck- you can really imagine it in action in WWI. The tires look to be solid rubber- is that right?
