Re: My 1929 640 has no thermostat, is this correct???

Hello Dave, Have located my parts book and the thermostat that goes in the head is composed of multiple parts including a valve head, seat bellows and other items which all attach between the upper water outlet casting and the cylinder head. From what I see in the parts book, the array of parts are rebuildable if you can locate a complete assy. I looked thru the residue of three 29 Packards yesterday and could not find one. Still hope to find one for myself.

I saw one today and believe the crank pulley is spaced out about a belt width.

If you do get a T, strongly recommend joining the Model T Ford International, a great organization with folks all over the world and a great source for information.
Their web site ishttp://www.modelt.org/

T's are a lot more forgiving than Packards! When you do get in the T business, would be glad to provide pointers on getting the car tour ready.

Hello Dave, According to my 29 service manual the 640 has the same thermostat as a 626. It is known as the thermostat sylphon and is located in the housing above the head that the upper hose attaches to. The 640 as well as the 626 also has the shutter thermostat located on the front side of the radiator top inside the grill shell. If your car has a side mounted water pump, would you please provide the fanbelt numbers and mfg, usually stamped or printed on the flat outside of the fan belt.

T's are for fun! Just came off a national tour in SD running mountains for a week. Go with the black T unless you have a well trained wife to polish brass. It has a elec starter which saves lots of elbow grease. If you want a T just to look at, go with the brass one.

A big thanks for the information. Everything came apart just as advised. Anyone have a correct fan belt size, Gates or NAPA number?

Have the rad. off my 626 to be recored and would like to put a new solid fan belt on to replace a linkbelt. Book says to remove vib. dampener to get belt on. How is this done. My repair book shows the later version that has a water pump on the front of the block and belt pulley on the front of the vib. dampener. My engine has the side water pump and crank pulley is behind the vib. dampener. Understand the hand crank nut must be removed and maybe the four 3/8" bolts but what then? There is only about 1/4" between the front crossmember and dampener.

Pull the plugs and clean them with a wire brush. While the boil over was going on, coolant could have been sucked in thru the breather and fouled your plugs.

That sure looks like the same linkage that is on my 29 626. I would say if you could get the ends, the shaft would be common. Will look at the carb to shaft end and see if it also is something that could be made/copied.

This is what is known as a "link belt". Still in use today for lots of industrial uses. For at least the 29's it was an alternative to a solid belt. To install a solid belt the rad. and vib. damp. had to be removed for clearance at the front crossmember. A link belt was a easy repair and is mentioned in the 29 service lit.
